What does your character think of birthdays? Do they celebrate? Do they treat others' differently from their own?

Jim's birthday is in four days. He doesn't give a toss about it, but he does like Sherlock spoiling the hell out of him and will happily take the excuse for that to happen.

He doesn't give a toss about anyone else's birthday either, apart from Sherlock's, because it's an excellent excuse to spoil him in return. He will not be outdone on the extravagant-yet-heartfelt celebration front.

That's birthdays these days. In the past, he would either ignore it utterly, or celebrate it on his own by flying halfway around the world to a specific restaurant, or picking up a new suit, or similar.

Wilford is indifferent. He doesn't go out of his way to acknowledge it, but if someone wants to take him for drinks or something, he won't say no.

For the most part, he ignores other people's birthdays as well. There's a small list of people who he'll over to take out for drinks or something, but it's a very small list consisting of people he wants to keep happy so they don't abandon his grumpy ass.

Alistair...does not actually know his birthday! Not the exact day, anyway. He knows he was born sometime in Wintermarch -- roughly equivalent to January in the Gregorian calendar -- so most of the time, he just lumps in his "birthday" celebration with First Day (the traditional new year holiday). Easier all around, and no matter where he goes, he's guaranteed a party!

Tess has two birthdays and she hates them both. She ignores them most of the time. She treats other peoples' birthdays as something to celebrate, if they're on her team. If you're not, then she doesn't care.

Birthdays aren't that big for Rose. Sure, she got a little party every year in the Facility, but it's just not the same without her mom and dad. She thinks others' birthdays are okay.

Sikozu doesn't have a birthday.

Kylo doesn't care.

Emcee doesn't know his real birth date, so he picked December 31 as a convenient way to celebrate it along with the biggest party of the year, New Year's Eve. He doesn't actually announce it or anything, it's more of an inside joke for himself. The New Year's Eve party is much more important. As for other people's birthdays, if he knows they want a party or other kind of celebration big or small, he'll want to help. He's much more enthusiastic about pointing out other's birthdays than his own.

I think both Pam and Cassidy think birthdays are pointless, for themselves at least. Comes with living so long they kind of forget the significance. Cassidy is also the most terrible person at forgetting other people's birthdays, even those closest to him.

Do Vikings celebrate birthdays? Maybe? I don't know if Floki would be into it, he doesn't seem the type to make a fuss over himself reaching another year.

Vikings didn't really celebrate birthdays, because the birth itself wasn't as important as the father accepting the child as his own. Dad had nine days to decide whether or not he wanted to keep the child, which was a public thing where he basically said, "yep, the kid's good. I want it." Whether or not they actually celebrated the name day each subsequent year is unclear, because documentation is all screwy, as with everything else Viking. It might have just been a nobility thing, or possibly something that only happened after Christian influence?

Thanks for the info, seems legit! Sounds more like a nobility thing to me, if there was a public ceremony involved. I can see Ragnar having done that, but not Floki. Floki being Floki wasn't even there for the birth of his daughter and didn't even come to see her and Helga, though mostly because of Plans getting in the way. He was torn about having a child in any case. He did name her, though! ...After Loki's giantess wife. Because he's Floki like that.

Yeah, Floki's baby angst was all over the place. But he's Floki. What else can you expect?

I think the show did kind of try to go into the whole period of acceptance thing with Ivar, but it was really mostly just focused on Ragnar being Ragnar than anything else.

Chirrut and Baze share a birthday! Back when they were baby monks, Chirrut told Baze that he didn't have one, so they picked one together and celebrated with tea and cookies--while they were at the temple, anyway. During the lean occupation years, it was difficult to celebrate anything, and tea and cookies were in short supply.

That being said, they're planning a party in Milliways for this February!
