Thursday DE

Ah, this one's been sitting around in my list of potential DE questions for a while, and seems ~topical~:

Your character has to host a children’s birthday party. How does it go?

Jay - Great! Jay is great with kids. Okay, so the kids in question might learn a few new words and maybe how to hotwire a car but they'll have had a good time.

Bodhi - the kids would go home well fed but I'm not sure how he'd do entertaining them. Not any more.

Sinric... he was good with Yan's two sons but kids en masse? Not so sure.

Present Hank would be a stick in the mud. He might fall back on classic like "Pin the Tail on the Donkey" but he is a huge dork. Once he gets his groove, watch out. I can see him preping in the lab bringing all his mad science to bear for entertainment. Imagine Mr. Wizard with comic book science...mwhahahahah

"Hey kids, wanna see a dead body?"

To be fair, a hands-on science lesson about decomposition and/or embalming would have worked on me when I was ten. But if the kids don't like dead things Aradia's not sure what else to do.

Emcee would plan one of his usual parties, but without booze and it goes past everyone's bedtime. Parents are annoyed that their children have ended up covered in glitter.

Cassidy is that guy who says he has everything under control and then ten minutes in he completely loses control and would just keep feeding the kids sugary snacks until they all either get sick or crash.

I could map my thoughts in reaction to Emcee's answer as I read it.

Emcee (oh gods there'd be so much glitter) would plan one of his usual parties (Soooooo very much glitter), but without booze and it goes past everyone's bedtime. Parents are annoyed that their children have ended up covered in glitter (Yessssssss!).

Enjolras: ...HAHAHAHAHA.

Uh, he turns around and delegates it out to literally anyone else he in good conscience can, that's how! Otherwise, if for some reason he has to do it, it's... well, it's probably not the worst party ever in that he would basically just find somewhere with room to run around, provide some kind of foodstuff (though someone might have to tell him that cake is an expected thing in later years), and hope the kids would take care of the rest themselves while he kept an eye out for any of them getting into mortal peril. If he's lucked out, these are kids that works for. If he hasn't, everyone is in for a stressful few hours.

Cosette, however, would have a great time planning it, and a great time running it, and generally would be exhausted after but in a happy way. With some allowances for cultural differences in expectations (i.e. someone's gonna have to tell her to get cake too, if these kids would expect it), it'll go pretty well. Probably not the most exciting party ever, just because she doesn't have a lot of party experience of the right sort.

Thor would do GREAT. He loves kids! Kids love him! He loves parties! And feasting! And games and conviviality! He's a giant shiny brightly colored guy with a very dramatic decorating sense! All those kids would have the time of their lives, and run around shrieking and giggling a lot, and come home happily exhausted while Thor wandered cheerfully off to hang out with friends (and some poor servants or waitrats got to do clean-up.)

Kazul would do great too. If they're dragon kids: she's got grandchildren! She knows how to entertain dragonets, even if she secretly likes them better when they're older and can have a more sensible conversation. If they're human kids: SHE'S A FRIENDLY DRAGON.

Doctor Dinosaur has a very cunning plan, no doubt, and it probably involves either stealing the kids' science fair projects or eating them all. He's roundly defeated by either Atomic Robo or the children or both.

Oh gad.

Steven loves throwing parties and is pretty good at it! Probably gets everyone involved in a sing along almost immediately. Lots of games and cake and activities, and they're all totally age appropriate by modern standards! definitely the best bet out of my characters.

Bahorel would have a great time, and so would the kids. He's all about finding Activities to Burn Off Energy, and hey, they're kids, so some of them would even be Legal Activities -- and he'd also have a place the quieter kids can sit out of the various games of Yell And Run Around and create their own quiet havoc with, because of Life Experience with quiet intense people as an adult. There'll be overindulgent food, it'll be messy, everyone including him will probably need to hose off by the end and be covered in confetti for days. Good Times.

Joly...is it a party of fairly nerdy children who'll be happy running science experiments or maybe looking for weird bugs?? He might be able to handle that. He'll probably remember to get some sort of food into everyone at some point. And he'll save the heavy Recovery Drinking for after they've gone home. He is not the Absolute Worst option for watching kids for a few hours, but he would rather not, really.

Gringoire is the Worst. In practically anything, and definitely in this. He's going to end up being a pinata before the event is through. Possibly because he tries to eat the cake first. He's Not Great with kids.

Lesgle would manage. He's not really a kid person, but he knows the basic rule of Feed Them Many Sweets. And he likes parties! There would be balloons because balloons are cool, and there would be music because everyone likes music, and there would be all kinds of little pastries because obviously, and he'd hang out behind a big table dishing out ice cream. It would be a fun party for kids that like running and shouting and not having structure. He'd do his best to scoop up the quieter kids and engage them in conversation or something, but again kids aren't really his demographic.

Feuilly is a bit lost. He's been around kids plenty, he just...what do you do other than feed them? He'd try setting up an arts&crafts project or two, which would probably go over fairly well, though it wouldn't be anyone's Party Of The Year.

Loki's party is fun for kids who like things turning into snakes.

William Douglas has ten million siblings and, let's be real, is barely an adult himself. He'll throw a bunch of food at the kids and give them some balls to kick around, and maybe join in on that. If you don't like violent schoolyard games you're S.O.L.

......I'm sorry, where did you get the idea that "explaining things to family members" was part of any Odinson's idea of a party?
