Good evening Milliways!

It's that time of year again where Maru and I tell you what we have in store for your pups in the upcoming festive season. With the kind approval of the mods, this year we bring you the #Hauntyholidays plot, very loosely based on A Christmas Carol.

Does your pup have a character flaw, tendency or regret?

During the whole month of December, patrons of Milliways will be haunted by one or more ghosts of the past, present or future, bringing that flaw or regret to their attention. What they choose to do with it is entirely up to them, but the ghost will continue to pester them until they resolve to do something about it, or until Christmas morning, whichever is sooner.

Your pup can be haunted by one or more of the ghosts. The ghosts are only visible/audible to the pup they are haunting and will announce themselves initially in the form of a vision or dream - much like Conversations With Dead People - before going on to generally pester the pup.

Any pups who do not wish to participate may simply not have a ghost, very straightforward.

Interested?

There is no sign up required, but please read all the general instructions and those for your ghost before you start, and please remember to mark the post Haunty Holidays in the subject line.

General instructions

How do I pick a flaw or regret?

In A Christmas Carol, Scrooge's flaw is to be miserly and mean. So as a suggestion, try to pick something like a personal weakness, a fear of something you'd like them to conquer, or a conflict they'd like to resolve with a loved one.

What we're not really looking for is for your pup to relive a traumatic event for the whole of December.

My pup doesn't celebrate Christmas, can they still take part?

ABSOLUTELY. It can be the 'ghost of [holiday] past/present/future' or simply the 'ghost of the past/present/future'. The plot will however end on 25th December for all.

Which version of the ghost/ghosts should I use? What are the ghosts like?

Any version you like, or make your own up. There are about a million versions of A Christmas Carol from Muppet to Blackadder. Or you can pick an invisible ghost.

You can have one ghost, two, or all three. You should start off with one vision for each ghost you have.

Your pup's ghost is visible and audible only to your pup. But they can influence the environment around if you wish, e.g. picking up objects.

The ghosts should:
- Appear in at least one vision (more if you like)
- Pester your pup (see individual ghost guidelines below for examples)
- Disappear when your pup puts a New Year's Resolution in the jar on the bar that Father Christmas will leave, or on Christmas Day, whichever is sooner. This is regardless of whether your pup keeps the resolution.

The ghosts should not:
- Do anything more violent than throw small objects.
- Engage in anything involving sex or nudity.
- Follow your pup outside the bar.

Can I get rid of the ghost early?

Absolutely, just have your pup make a New Year's Resolution in the jar on the bar left by Father Christmas.

In the spirit of fun, he won't leave the jar on the bar until about mid December, and after that everyone can start figuring this out.

What if my pup doesn't want to change?

Either they can make the resolution and not keep it (the ghost disappears as soon as the resolution goes in the jar) or they can continue to be haunted until Christmas day.

Can I start late?

Yes, you can start your pup being haunted any time, but the plot will end on December 25th. You can have your ghosts in sequence, or the same time.

Specific ghost instructions

Pups haunted by ghosts of the past

1. Choose a version of the ghost
2. Start off with an oom-style vision (like with Conversations with Dead People) of something that happened in your pup's past.
3. After this, your pup is haunted. This may manifest in a number of ways, but suggestions include:
- More visions if you wish
- Technology around them briefly replaced by older fashioned items until they go outside of the bar again. e.g. a smart phone becomes a 3310 or a wind up phone.
- Suddenly finding themselves in old-fashioned clothing or styles.
- Items from their past e.g. a type of childhood toy keep popping up randomly
- Being served old-fashioned food from the bar.
4. The ghost should get gradually more intrusive until the resolution is made, or Christmas Day, whichever is sooner.

Pups haunted by ghosts of the present

1. Choose a version of the ghost
2. Start off with an oom-style vision (like with Conversations with Dead People) of something that is happening in your pup's present/recently.
3. After this, your pup is haunted. This may manifest in a number of ways, but suggestions include:
- Technology constantly sets off alarm clocks/notifications for no reason
- Keep finding sheets of daily calendar paper with today's date in their pockets.
- Being served weird fortune cookies with phrases like 'Don't put off until tomorrow what you can do today'
- Pups who wear clothes that is unfashionable for their time keep finding themselves in the latest trend.
4. The ghost should get gradually more intrusive until the resolution is made, or Christmas Day, whichever is sooner.

Pups haunted by ghosts of the future

1. Choose a version of the ghost
2. Start off with an oom-style vision (like with Conversations with Dead People) of something that will happen in your pup's future, if things do not change (there is no obligation to keep to this).
3. After this, your pup is haunted. This may manifest in a number of ways, but suggestions include:
- Technology constantly installs updates
- Suddenly finding themselves in futuristic clothing
- Being served weird future food from the bar
- Suddenly growing hair/facial hair like waking up with a beard that should have taken years.
4. The ghost should get gradually more intrusive until the resolution is made, or Christmas Day, whichever is sooner.

Okay. I think that covers everything? Any questions/concerns?

Oooh, this sounds great. Though I'll have to think about whether I want to subject Jim to Annoyance a full month before he gets married. Maybe I'll do it but have him make a resolution (which he will never keep) as soon as the jar shows up. I will think on it.

But! Either way, thanks for thinking up another fun plot, guys. I always enjoy your Chrimbo madness. :D

Oh this looks like fun and I think I know which pup to bother. Just to clarify, we can have the Ghost visit at anytime beyond the nighttime visit? Like after the weird dream, Danny can be chilling in bar and the Ghost pops up to try yet again to get the message across, it’s just no one else will see it?

Now to decide if it’s Carol Kane or Roger Taylor that visits poor Danny.

Perfectly. And that had been as I understood from your original post, I just wanted to make sure I was reading it right. :)

very much keen on this idea. I can't decide if I'm going to torture Jay or Sinric or both.
