Monday DE

Sorry it's late. I'm still sick and moving and being aware this morning is a challenge. Thus I'm pulling from the suggestion box.

[personal profile] iprotectyou  would like to know: What is your character's favorite scent?

Emcee: a smoky, boozy, sweaty nightclub.

If Emcee were to live into the late '90s, early '00s, and happen to make it to Brighton, England, there was a club called The Joint. It's not there any more, but oh, I loved it when it was...

It was this tiny little place in a basement, barely room for 100 people with about ten square feet of dance floor, a bar and a couple of ledges and elevated niches with poles for more dancing or trying to catch fresher air, and when the night got going, if the place was full, the sweat would be dripping off the walls. Super-kitsch furnishings, all leopard print fake fur and red leather seats. Freely flowing booze and when it was still legal to smoke in bars and clubs, the smell of that too.

And once or twice a week, there was a cabaret helmed by a guy called Boogaloo Stu, who I think is still around on the London scene, and a drag queen called Dolly Rocket. Emcee would have loved it.

Oh wow, I'm glad you have memories of this place because it sounds absolutely perfect. Emcee definitely would have loved it!

I would be happily brain-picked if you do decide he ever gets to visit!

Cassian: hot cocoa, the combination of smells from his ship and Kay

Charles: Earl Grey tea, Erik

Will S.: Sherwood in the spring

Demeter: fresh baked bread, spring

I need to think on the other ones.

The smell of Nathan's Famous hot dogs and the Coney Island beach in summer.

Baze has a lot of favorite scents! Pumpkin soup with Ishi-tib cracked coconut, sapir, shortbread cookies with berry jam, clean sweat after a sparring match, chocolate, vanilla...

But his most favorite scent is Chirrut Imwe.

Moss and dirt. You might think a robot wouldn't have a sense of smell, but you'd be wrong, because detecting airborne chemical compounds from a distance is a pretty useful ability even if you're not susceptible to poisons or pathogens and your fuel source isn't found in nature. (It's not meaningfully stronger than a human's sense of smell, because they aren't optimised for smelling, it's just one sensor among many.) Bastion's reactions to smells are based mostly on personal associations, so they often don't react to scents humans find pleasant or highly unpleasant, but they're aware of them.

Enjolras doesn't consciously have one. But unconsciously, especially nowadays: the smell of Paris, especially the Quartier Latin, as it was in the 1830s. Yes, it was a pretty smelly place, but it was also home.

Thor: probably ozone. :D?

Cosette: probably does have a favorite scent in the more traditional sense! I'm not sure if she wears perfume per se or if she just has scented soap, but she would at least have that. It's probably something light and floral. She also has plenty of sentimental favorites.

Kazul: ...cherries jubilee en flambé is up there.
