Friday DE: Flashback

It’s almost the weekend. I hope you get to enjoy it.

How about you tell us about any early fanworks you might have done?

My first real entry into fandom was Yu-Gi-Oh! crack!fic fanfiction where the characters of the show did things like work on a farm, take field trips to my local beach (with plenty of hometown references no one but my friends understood), and reenact the plot of And Then There Were None, for some reason.

I think fanfiction.net mercifully took it down several years ago after a rule change, which is for the best, really.

*hides head* Ahahah... my first fan works were a collaborative effort between me and my best friend in middle school, unrepentant self-insert crack!fic MSTs of one of our favorite book series, which led us to also do mixtapes and fanart of our own works and extensive backstories that only ever existed in our heads..... the MSTs were also mercifully taken down by a fanfiction.net rules change, though I still have all the chapters and they still occupy a fond place in my heart.

Also not-good halfhearted marauders-era HP fanfic, involving mysterious curses whose nature I hadn't really thought out, and unrequited love.

The Dark is Rising Sequence, by Susan Cooper.

I still love it dearly.

One of the very first fanfics I wrote before I even knew what a fanfic was, was Will Scarlett hanging out on the TNG Enterprise with Wesley and helping to trick and take care of boarders along with learning how to read. I don't remember if I ever wrote any of my TaleSpin fanfic down or only thought about it.

I wrote a backstory for my first D&D character who I started playing a summer in middle school and assorted backstories for other RP characters. Oh and I once did a book report/fanfic from the Three Musketeers where I wrote some of D'Artagnan's diary and then tea stained the pages.

Oh and during elementary school, my best friend and I wrote long and complex stories on index cards with illustrations of houses that we decorated.

My first - and only - fanfic (discounting RP and related works) was a Spuffy fic that I never finished and it was horrible and I erased it not long after.

The first fanfic I ever wrote was in high school, long before I even had the internet. It was a Jeeves & Wooster story written in probably a very cringey P.G. Wodehouse style. I haven't dared looked at it in a long time.

Actually maybe before that, or around the same time, I wrote a Blackadder II screenplay. Yes, British comedy was essential in my formative years.

In high school I wrote a HUGE, and I do mean HUGE, Duran Duran fanfic inspired by the Wild Boys video; I once brought the final chapter to a ST:TNG fanfic I was thinking about writing the rest of to a creative writing class in college; I posted my first online fanfic (X-Files) in 1997, while I was half-heartedly attending grad school.

I can't think of a time I wasn't a fan of something and wanting to participate with stories.

Way back in college, I started a Legion of Super-Heroes fanfic about Polar Boy. And then moved to do some Batman fic, including one that was meant to fix everything that was wrong the Batman comics back then. I had no idea it was called fanfiction, of course.

And after seeing the 1989 Batman film, I fleshed out the idea for a spinoff TV show about Alexander Knox. So if you ever wondered where I got the idea to play him in the Bar, it came from that impulse. It would have been about Knox, Commissioner Gordon, and the lower level crooks and weirdoes that never get Batman's attention except in a season finale (because Michael Keaton wasn't going to be on a TV show). A few of the ideas I had from the show trickled into my RP, but I never wrote most of them down.

... My first one was about a Jedi escaping Order 66 with a bunch of younglings because reasons. It's... SO bad. I would delete it but I don't remember the password for that account, and even worse SOMEONE SENT A MESSAGE ASKING WHEN IM GOING TO CONTINUE IT AND I'M LIKE NO, BEBE, GO READ SOMETHING GOOD.

...yeah, no. My early fanworks need to be forgotten and never see the light of day again.

My earliest fic still up on the internet should, I think, still be somewhere. Bionicle fic. I'm too lazy to actually go find it, but it Doesn't Suck! Maybe I'll find it.

Otherwise my earliest stuff was some weird massive crossover that was expanding the geopolitics of Enchanted Forest Chronicles and trying to fix that Mendanbar was totally out of touch for years because I thought that was massively unfair, and it was kinda a self-insert except that, like, said self-insert just literally turned into in-character Cimorene because why make up someone new when you can be Cimorene. I even made up a family name for the royal house of Linderwall. That fic was pretty terrible, I grant you. But it was also for a class and never saw the light of day.

I do still have up online a Sandman story I wrote in '08 and am happy to link to it for the curious.
