Monday DE: it's Monday somewhere

Special thanks to [personal profile] inlovewithwords for helping with today's topic.

What characters have you invented to serve as support for you pups. Are they a part of the canon character's history? Or perhaps a confident, or nemesis? Tell us something about them and how they came to be. Did they fill a plot hole or add depth to a shallow part of canon? Are there any you would play in Milliways if they were canon?

Chirrut mun and I invented a whole cast of characters to fill out the host of people needed to run the Temple of the Kyber.

Some of them are, in no particular order:
- Master Sheotar, the master-at-arms, an uncompromising black lady who trained both the boys
- Farki, an infirmary tech of the werewolf-like race whose name escapes me
- Master Cabaril, a brown-skinned human who's older than dirt and "rescued" Chirrut from the streets
- Eiko, a non-human girl with white skin and hair who learned staffwork from Chirrut
- and many, many others.

I would play Eiko in a heartbeat if she were canon.

Ahahahaha. Um.

Kingdom Hearts X has a dearth of named characters. There's the Foretellers, Mog, and the other Dandelions (Ephemera, Skuld, Strelitzia, Blaine, and Ventus), and any named Disney characters, and that's it. There's a regular group of NPC keybearers who you have missions with, but none of them get names, and there are a bunch of other unnamed recurring keybearers too.

So a lot of stuff with Eden in OOMs is just filling out that cast.

Most of them aren't invented, though. Since Kingdom Hearts likes to use AU-fied versions of Final Fantasy characters, I've taken the same tack, and most of them are FF characters: The Leopardos kids are all from spin-off games, the Ursus kids are all FF antagonists, and the Vulpes kids are all from FF MMOs.

Pretty much everyone Wilford interacts with on his side of the door is someone I invented. The exception is his boss from when he was still network. Ryan McGee’s character in the Warfstache Affair was never given any backstory, but sleeping with the boss’ wife seems like exactly something Wilford would do. And then I went and ignored Ned, because I never went through that portion of canon.

The characters I did add fill roles that would logically exist in context - his producer, tech crew, researchers, other reporters on the show, etc. I wanted to be able to play with the TV studio aspect, so these people needed to be fleshed out. I modelled Billy after the guy who played Slender Man in the first Warfstache video, and I’d love to be able to bring him into the game. I think having Wilford’s BFF in the bar would clear up a lot of confusion on all sides.

Let's see for Cassian in the Rebellion: Pel, Lillah, Ian, Doctor Relyne, long time informant: Mast, the entire cast when I did the Ord Mantell OOMs and many others I'm forgetting from fic and OOMs. As well as adding more depth to characters like General Merrick.

Will S, I populated Nottingham and treated all the other Merry Men, Marian as NPCs, which oh that was fun. Those OOMs in Nottingham are some of my favorites.

Demeter, a lot of the town in Southern France where she and Kore live.

For the others, I haven't created as many since either I haven't done as many OOMs that needed new characters or they've been more in fic form.

William, I took hints from the movie to build out some of the town like the Hollanders.

Moist, he has a rotating cast of people that he's stealing from. I try to know their histories but they never matter to him except as a way to get profit.

Charles, I did some people in Oxford but at a certain point, all of his main connections are canon characters.

Sameth, I'm blanking on names but I've created a few guards and people around the palace with the help of fellow castmates.

Ivan and Tumnus, there hasn't been a need, canon provides enough though for Tumnus, I did create OC historical figures for him to research. That's building off of things that I've done in fic.

To the second question, I don't think there are any that I'd play in Milliways. Since so many of them fit in their particular place but I love when they interact with Milliways people. I think Mast actually was created in the midst of a fantastic OOM with Sombra on Coruscant and now he's appeared in a number of fics.

X's Little League team is entirely made up. So is her landlord Mr. Simmons, and Pam, her waitress friend at the diner on the corner (she and her wife own the diner business), and Inez and Tomas at the hardware store (Tomas is on her Little League team, or he was. He is probably in college now, damn). I made up a neighborhood of people for X to know, because it's fun to play with normal people dealing with X, and it was fun to have them sort of fall in around her and adopt her, and I like tight-knit neighborhoods like the one my grandparents had in the city. So. I don't think I'd app them, though they would roll with Milliways since X has brought so many Milliways peeps to see them.

Ysalwen -- I don't think I've made up too many people, mostly I've taken them from the games directly. Except Meraad, she's my own invention. And then I decided she's the Qunari Inquisitor and now I have whole new realms of things Ysa can be adjacent to and concerned about! I would app Meraad in a heartbeat.

No one else really has much NPC shenanigans as those two. Especially X.

Ellen has several Brotherhood Knights and Scribes who served under her command at the RobCo plant for a while, one or two of whom eventually accompanied her to Philadelphia. None of them actually exist in canon. I wanted to give her people other than Millifolken who could get that project dealt with, because it seemed completely unfair to me that you couldn't make at least some kind of effort in game to do more with a robot factory than just scavenge it for parts. Her husband Jerrold is one of those Scribes.

Adrian Shephard's entire family was created for background fill-in purposes, because he's canonically a paper-thin FPS protagonist who has a handful of paragraphs of very stilted journal entries and a brief tutorial for his background and that's it. Mostly his family came to be because I was working backwards from those paragraphs- reading them felt like reading the stuff some of my high school English classmates wrote, the ones who were B students but who didn't like class at all came up with. A B student who joined the Marines instead of going to college seemed like someone who might plausibly have come from a rural area to me, and I'd been to Preston County, West Virginia, so that seemed like a good starting point; from there I went with what I had seen of some of the local families.

Quicksilver: Well, we've seen his mom on camera and we've seen his little sister, although she hasn't actually had any lines. Since his mom mentioned another sister while Peter had the sparkleprincess little sister in frame with him, I've gone with the assumption that the sister upstairs is Wanda and that Mutant!Wanda (as opposed to Avengers!Wanda) is 'weird' and 'throws these freaky energy bolts when she's mad'; it's not exactly inventing someone for support but it's filling in a hole that canon didn't exactly bother to update for us. I have also had him call the sparkleprincess sister Lori in the hopes that when she hits puberty her hair will turn green, but honestly, that's as close as I've gotten to support chars for him.

Haven't really invented new ones for Stacker, Santo, Varric, or Fawkes.

Tess has George, her ever faithful PA. I invented him ages ago because she always had a go-to guy in canon. He's fabulous, good at his job and mostly invisible because he knows Tess so well. She adores him, though she'd never admit it.

I've invented more characters for Sunshine over the years than I can actually remember that well. Most are support and filler for Rae's life. There's a whole host of schoolmates for little!Rae to know and for teenaged!Rae to have gotten in trouble with or to have lost in the Wars, and quite a few coffeehouse-related people tangential to named characters in the book. Some are people who are mentioned in passing but not given names or details, and I've added detail into their characterization and life situation.

>_> One of my favorite little things in canon is (apart from the single-syllable names of Rae, Con, Mel, and Pat) just how many names of secondary and minor characters' names end with the -ee sound. Sadie, Charlie, Kenny, Billy, Jesse, Paulie, Mary, Emmy, Harry... the list goes on. So most of the minor NPCs I've created follow that naming scheme. Terry, Julie, Barry, Nikki, Christie, Tony, Ginny....

The most detailed character I've invented whole-cloth is Regional Director Misra of SOF. I enjoy the background I've put together for him, and how his situation simultaneously clashes and aligns with Rae's own, due to shared and differing experiences and priorities.

I don't think any would be easily played in Milliways. Even canonical characters are all only ever seen through the lens of Rae's perspective and experience, so it would be difficult to discern what is true and what is Rae's interpretation.

The characters in World of Warcraft are numerous. So numerous. Despite this, most of the things that get done on the ground level are done by adventurers, ie player characters. These are the Commanders and champions mentioned in his OOMs, the forces he'll be directing and helping. There are multiple of them for a reason: to give me options. One is so I can send the race or class that makes the most sense to check things out (a druid should probably be checking out the crazy nature growth, not the warlock). A second is so I can have him work with both the Horde and Alliance as needed. And next expansion every PC becomes the leader of their class hall...and all answer to Khadgar. So I'm setting that up now as well.

Plenty of NPCs have history with Khadgar. I've given some of the OCs history with him as well (most of them have worked with him already), but a few are new to this whole saving the world thing (see: Ben and Zi). Asurra knows him particularly well since they met when Khadgar was first trapped on Outland.

...there's about 20 real world years of Warcraft lore, 10 of those in the game. It definitely gets crazy over here.

Which is why I'm so excited for Overwatch lore with Gabe. Blizzard is no stranger to telling big huge tales while still giving us little PoV perspectives. OW is such a new story and there's so much they can do with it...which makes me leery of getting too specific with any OCs. That being said, everyone except Jack Morrison is an OC. I haven't really taken the time to flesh most of them out beyond a name since most won't be making it all the way through SEP.

I don't think I'd play any of them in Milliways, though the idea of apping a draenei just for the novelty of a blue skinned space goat in the bar interests me.

For Emcee's backstory, I've had to invent the prostitutes who raised him, Mama Lily the madam and several other women. Then there was the nameless opera aficionado who'd taken a liking to him when he was a teenager and was his patron for a while. They don't exist in his current life, but they were the more formative people in his younger life that he still remembers with fondness. Then there was Herr Herschel and his daughter Ana who appeared in a couple of OOMs, the last one being a Chanukah dinner. I wanted them to remind Emcee (and readers) of his forgotten roots.

I've had to invent Floki's parents. Though he does visit the burial site of his father in canon, he never speaks of them. So based on viking society, I would think that Floki's father was a master shipbuilder as well, who had served under previous earls. His mother may have had healing skills or was considered a bit witchy, like Helga. So whenever I have Floki tell stories about his parents or his childhood in threads, it's complete speculation on my part.

This is not actually about an NPC in Tavi's OOMs--I've stayed away from OCs for that so far, though I have Ideas--or the many many Alerans I have had to invent across all parts of its timeline, but about the one character I wish to hell and back I could play in an RP and I will never, ever be able to. So PFSB it is, she's always there for the interested.

tl;dr Tavi's grandmother is so sweet and normal a person (except... not quite, but it doesn't show unless she's playing politics) and makes Gaius Sextus adorable and I don't know how it happened. Read on for the longer version.

So once upon a time I was sitting around and had this thought of writing an AU that would save some of the women Butcher axed pre-canon (sigh). But one of them doesn't even get a name, let alone any screen time, and seemed interesting: Tavi's paternal grandmother, Gaius Sextus' first wife. So I went digging. Also around that time I had reasons to realize a few things about Sextus himself and how he reacted to her and to her death, and their son's, and started filling in holes.

Turns out there's this very specific shape left by this totally unnamed woman. She had to be beautiful, rich, intelligent, educated, high-born, incredibly powerful furycrafter, politically savvy, apparently a People Person and a diplomat, strong-willed, kind, probably not politically progressive but not reactionary either, a talented painter, and above all loved and trusted by her husband--which for reasons also implies strongly that she loved him deeply in return. I took a chance some years ago to talk to Butcher and ask him a question or two about her, and got Word of God that their marriage was arranged and that they were always a unified front in public and she'd call him an asshole in private. No, really, those were exact words, it was great. The more I started trying to figure her out, the more her backstory and that entire history became fascinating and impossible to resist and in particular this missing woman was just the best. There is just so much with her even without extrapolating too far beyond the sketch of the hole she left behind, let alone what happens after I get creative.

So yeah. If she were even slightly more canonical than she is, with just a canonical name and even half a page of presence in someone's memory, I swear to god I'd play her somewhere. But she's not, Word of God notwithstanding. So I'm stuck with building out endless history for Tavi's grandmother and the world she lived in that led to the world that both shapes and is shaped by Tavi... and all the many AUs both of Aleran timelines or just totally alternate 'verses (Earth, Potter, Star Wars, etc) and her histories there oopsies. Or playing her in sandbox when the mood strikes.

(ps if anyone wants to meet laetitia in sandbox let me know because she is legit 100% always available for rp)

For Teja, all the post-canon Goths in Gotland -- most of the grown-ups are canon, but all the kids are post-canon. Well, Liuta was canonically pregnant when they all sailed away with the Vikings, but that's all. Agilulf and Martialis Romanus, the ones who brought the cats to Gotland and bred generations of them, are uncanonical, too; they're OCs from the mass execution scene at Cumae (canonical and also historical) that I wrote for Teja's nightmare during a horror plot early in his stay, I think it was the Kingdom Hospital one.
