Wednesday DE

Oh gosh, yesterday's DE sounds so brilliant! Mind if you go and play there some more? I am definitely sending some Gotlanders over shortly.

If you'd rather meta, then tell me who your characters would be in a classic manor house whodunnit murder mystery?

With sincere apologies to M. Poirot.

Yrael is the obvious but incorrect answer, the red herring. Or the one in the corner, snacking on red herring.

Sunshine is the too-kind-and-too-pure-for-this-genre girl-next-door who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and got mixed up in all these ghastly goings-on, who is eventually revealed to not be so out of place in the genre after all, even if she had nothing to do with the murder in question.

Dame Rumor is the cool-as-a-cucumber femme fatale, muddying the waters and sowing innocuously misleading information while the detectives try to put everything together.

Cassian is the mysterious foreigner that's a red herring, is arrested at least once before explaining he's either a spy for a government tracking someone or a soldier recovering from trauma. Damn, I could write this AU. *sits on hands*

Charles owns the manor where it's all happening and there are threats to his life. He's basically himself, rich, hiding and sad, bringing people together and then it all goes wrong.

One of Quentin's books is actually a murder mystery crossed with a haunted house. He's the detective's sidekick or the nephew/ward of the owner of the house.

Sameth is the odd friend of the son of the house, who comes from money but spends most of his time building things. It turns out that he's invented something that's wanted and creates a subplot to add to the confusion of the mystery.

Moist again, works as himself, he's lied to get into steal something but then has to prove that no of course he's not a killer.

Ivan has been in situations like those mysteries and again, who he is, loyal soldier, friend to the person at the center of it all, Miles still works.

Will S., he works on the estate, not in the main house but childhood friends with Robin, the man who owns.

William, American who works in the stables while trying to get an education, but suspicion falls on him as he doesn't fit.

Demeter, fascinating neighbor who lives with her daughter a few houses down and knows all the gossip and possibly a reason for disliking who died.

Tumnus, tutor to a young person in the house, shy and tries to stay out of trouble but knows more than he should.

I'd read that Cassian AU.
inlovewithwords: Milliways roster: Lois Lane (teen, Gwenda Bond books); Tavi (Codex Alera); Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader and R2-D2 (Star Wars); Evelyn Trevelyan (Dragon Age: Inquisition); Eriond (Belgariad/Mallorean) (Milliways roster 2017)

[personal profile] inlovewithwords 2018-01-24 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Eriond: Accidentally there, a little weird, obviously innocent.

Lois: Investigating, whether independently or annoying the police with her involvement.

Evelyn: falsely implicated, investigates to prove her innocence.

R2: Investigating, probably doing lots of legwork while the meatbag gets the credit.

Anakin: Probably investigating, possibly falsely implicated at some point. Dramatic fight scene to apprehend the villain.
Vader: . . . Scary, around, possibly even investigating if there's a reason for him to be curious or he's been ordered to by Palpatine (maybe Rebel activity or a high-ranking Imperial officer or it looks like maybe a Force-user and the Inquisitors were all busy), but everyone knows he didn't kill the person because if there's a murder of this style-- look, everyone would know if he'd killed someone, he doesn't try to cover his tracks.
(dead!Anakin: doesn't kill, because Luke would make sad puppy eyes at him, so probably falsely implicated and doesn't really care)

Tavi: Wow, I can see so many options for him. It depends so much on the circumstances!
The Investigator: definitely an option with him, especially for younger Tavi who goes digging in things he shouldn't be poking his nose into. Older Tavi is less likely to be the direct investigator and more likely the boss of whichever poor sod is stuck directly investigating, helpful but at a distance.
Falsely Implicated: Man this could happen so easily. There is basically no age at which there aren't people who would love to discredit him somehow. These days especially in a "well obviously it was a political hit! he's terrible!" way.
Target: trololol look he's the perfect target for assassination. He probably doesn't die and it becomes one of those preemptive investigations after an initial attempt.
Bait: Corollary to above. Less likely these days, unless someone's after his family. Turns out people don't like the reigning monarch making a target of himself.
Murderer: . . . Entirely possible. Frankly. Probably not with his own two hands, these days; he has people who work for him who do this sort of thing. But on his orders? Yeah it's possible. Also entirely possible he did the killing himself, under the right circumstances--but he doesn't like killing so probably not.

... Look I have no idea what he'd be, it depends what age he is and what's going on but he could do literally anything in it.

Hmmm *starts filing away plot ideas for the future*

Tess is the femme fatale/investigator type. As well as rolling her eyes and the likely incompetence of the police.

Rose is the True Innocent weeping in a corner.

Kylo... probably did it.

Victor is as very large, very annoyed red herring who will probably get arrested for something.

Emcee is The Mysterious German. There always seems to be a German in these things. He's not exactly guilty of anything but he plays coy because he has information, and he may be trying to protect someone with his doublespeak and careful withholding of the truth.

Floki is the handyman about the house. He knows the layout of the grounds and every nook and cranny. He may be a suspect because of his odd behavior and the tools he carries around-- one of them night be the murder weapon.

Cassidy is the red herring con man who isn't who he says he is and gets caught up in some unrelated lies. However, he tries to prove himself innocent by helping to find the killer. A scoundrel with a heart of gold, but mostly an opportunist.

Pam is the beautiful bitchy ice queen who absolutely does not crack under pressure from questioning. She didn't do it, though. She knows exactly who did, because as a vampire, she can smell blood and guilt, and the whole mystery would be over. This is why vampires shouldn't be detectives, mysteries would be too short.

I am cracking up at the idea of Anakin and Ahsoka being investigators. They'd try really hard and get some details, but it would inevitably turn into some action sequence like a fight or chase. At the big reveal of the murderer however, it will turn out they were a red herring and it'd been Obi-Wan investigating all along.

(I'm tempted to write this now but I am terrible at mysteries.)
configuration_birdwatcher: Bastion holding a lit firework on a stick about two feet from their face (bad idea in progress)

I'm delighted by the concept of slotting Bastion into a classic murder mystery formula, the fewer things changed about either the standard setting or the character the better, but I don't read or watch a lot of murder mysteries so I don't have a ton of ideas to use. They're falsely accused; they have no motive to murder that person in particular, but many of the other guests find it extremely plausible that a killer robot would slip back into murder mode and shoot someone for no other reason. (Assuming the cause of death was one or a few gunshot wounds. Accusing Bastion of poisoning someone would be kind of ridiculous, for instance.)

Lacking the ability to effectively question most people, they might try to help the detective(s) in whatever way they could, to clear their name.
