Monday DE: Do you, uh, AU?

I blame reading “Old Man Logan” this weekend for this.

Got any fun AU ideas for your pup’s canon? Anything you’re itching for AU Week for?

This may be a little inspired by some old RP logs I was digging through/that brief convo Graverobber had with Dracula, but: vampire vs. vampire-hunter AU!

I don't necessarily think too much about Repo! AUs, but I do kind of consider the canon itself to be "What if Alice in Wonderland, but cyberpunk and also everything goes terribly wrong?"

We did a Star Trek AU with Hera and Kanan (and Thrawn) last time, and recently I watched all of Star Trek Discovery, which does a lot with the mirror universe, so I was trying to think of a Terran Empire mirror universe version of our AU. Which. Basically this is getting to the point of being a matryoshka of AUs, but.

And while the Terran Empire generally works in Star Trek as 'morally invert your characters,' it's different if most of your characters are aliens, including Kanan in our case, since we made him half-Betazoid as a way to give him his "Force" powers. And with aliens and the Terran Empire... you're basically back in Star Wars. We've sort of landed on a Hera who is still a rebel, but much crueler and more calculating and ruthless than her prime counterpart, and a Kanan who serves in Terran Starfleet and lashes out at the Empire's enemies to express his own resentment at how the Terrans treat him for being part-alien. And Thrawn is still basically Thrawn, except helping the rebels in this universe. So fun times all around!

My works in progress folder is full of AUs for Cassian; the Leverage AU that I'm nearer to finishing, one where he and Jyn are Ice Dancers-Baze and Chirrut do their choreography, a college/grad school one where Jyn works in a library and Cassian keeps falling asleep there, also I have ideas but haven't written yet one of them in an Agatha Christie murder mystery setting. I'm not sure what I'll do for AU week, I do really love the Leverage one and I could move him farther along in the story.

I don't really have that much in terms of the others.

For some reason I came up with and noted down AU names for Amascut:
Amascut Bintre Al-Kharidi?
Saareh Bintre Al-Kharidi?
Sabakuno Akane?

But I don't have any AU week plans beyond that. I don't even (consciously) keep track of when AU week happens so now I am annoyed at the tiny quiet part of my brain that apparently does.

I probably will never do AU week, but I have so many AUs with Tavi, big and small. The big ones I play with are Star Wars (he is alternate Luke, obvs) and sci-fi Modern Earth Spy Shenanigans (possibly co-starring giant robots, so idk, giant espionage kids/Bourne/Terminator-esque world? It is hard because IRL politics are complicated), and the AU set in Alera where fewer of Tavi's lady-shaped relatives die pre-canon. I have toyed worldbuilding the inevitable Potterverse AU as well (he is such a toss-up between Slytherin and Gryffindor, but if he is American I do not know what happens). I think those are the major ones.

TBH I initially wrote Spy Kids but it was not really accurate so I changed it.

You would need a Fegan Floop.

Yeah, there's a reason I changed it. Even Tavi's version of silly is not really in that style.

I don't have any ideas, but I do have a question: when is AU week again?

Sure, sure. That's a better ballpark figure than I would have guessed!

Last year for AU week, I had to basically flip a coin between pirates or Victorian adventurer. Pirates won.

Imagine my face when canon retconned him to be the one I didn’t go for.
configuration_birdwatcher: Bastion (with their default skin) in a ready stance with their recon gun extended past the frame (here i come)

[personal profile] configuration_birdwatcher 2018-03-20 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not super interested in AUs where Bastion isn't some kind of artificial being, because I have a hard time separating that from the rest of their character concept and still having them feel like the same character. (Although I enjoy it when they turn up in mundane-modern-Earth Overwatch ensemble AUs as a human anyway. I tried doing a human design for them myself but 'human' drifted into 'android that can pass for human' before long.) This kinda constrains my options.
configuration_birdwatcher: In-game spray art of Bastion in recon form from the waist up, using their self-repair arm and surrounded by a circular yellow banner that says IN REPAIR (in repair)

I like the concept, but I don't know Star Wars canon nearly well enough to develop it. I've only seen the movies and read a few YA tie-in novels when I was a kid. I've heard good things about the Clone Wars series, but never seen it.

That's been my stumbling block for crossover AUs: I know of other canons with armies of killer robots I could make use of, but I don't know any of those canons well enough to do justice to it. Star Wars is one, but I also thought of the Terminator universe, which I've never actually seen anything from.
