Thursday DE

Late night posting since it’s easier this way.

On that theme, it’s it’s dark and the power suddenly goes out. What’s your character doing at the time, and how do they react?
takethatnature: Wilson in the ruins wearing wooden armor and holding a tentacle spike, with an expression of abject terror. (oh no)

Aradia: Most likely this is a scripted part of the dreambubble she walked into, and trolls are a nocturnal species so the dark doesn't bother her in its own right, so she just kinda keeps going.

Cirava: Statistically speaking they're probably streaming, in which case they'll be irritated about the interruption, or vaping psychoactive bioengineered bug farts, in which case they won't care that much about the inconvenience itself. However, they'll suspect foul play and go around their hive peeking out the windows on different sides of it to see if someone poisoned their electrical transformer (there's a lot of biotech on Alternia) or something of that nature.

Wilson: This likely isn't happening on the Don't Starve island - it's probably either in the bar, or post-canon - but unless there's, like, a full moon out the window or something to prevent it from being pitch black, he's going to react to being suddenly plunged into darkness by freaking out and whipping out a portable light source within seconds. He always keeps either a light source or sticks and grass to make a torch from in his inventory, because when he doesn't remember to do that, night falls and either the monster in the darkness eats him in two bites or he has to do something like spend the whole night running in circles chasing a swarm of fireflies.

He was probably doing some late-night science before that, if he's indoors.

Bastion: They're going to want some reassurance that it's not happening because the watchpoint is being attacked, and their above-average nervousness will probably make everyone else nervous. And nighttime is when they most often plug in to recharge, so that'll be a frustrating impediment and they might slip into sleep mode to charge from their fuel supply (against their will) if the power stays off for a while and their battery was already low.

Thurlow: Electric lighting is a rarity in Fallen London as it is, although darkness is plentiful. Unless they've travelled overzee to the Khanate for some reason, they're probably either meeting with someone rich and important who has the latest technology in home lighting, or visiting an exhibition of said latest lighting technology. They light up a candle or allow someone else to do that first, and observe that despite the advantages of electric light over gaslight it needs some improvement in reliability.

Either that, or someone set off an Unclear Device, a rare unconventional-weapon-thingy from Sunless Sea that swallows all light. (With the possible exception of Neath-coloured light, but that stuff has weird side effects.) The revolutionaries build them, and they're working on scaling the technology up to create a sort of doomsday device that could darken the entire Neath. I think Sunless Skies goes over more of this but I haven't played it, although I have a copy because I backed the Kickstarter. Thurlow only knows a little about what the revolutionaries are doing but they don't like it one bit. Also, someone activating a light-eating device near their lodgings is just generally a bad sign even if it isn't aimed at them personally.

Cecil has lit every candle and flashlight in the house and is clutching a photo album - basic defense preparations in power outages. I mean, otherwise you might forget everything, right?
