-Heroes who don't think of themselves as heroes -people with complex identities who move between various worlds -interesting backstories that provide space to think about how they became who they are -characters who have a sense of duty and/or people with ideas who they are and who they should be -they care, sometimes more than they feel that they should but their caring is a big part of how they interact with the world -friends, allies and enemies for them to be interacting with -canons and worlds that have a sense of depth and scale with empty parts to play in
I have an entire category of favorite characters whom I have dubbed Precious Science Child: -Pidge (Voltron: Legendary Defender) -Varian (Tangled: The Series/Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure) -Hiro Hamada (Big Hero 6) -Cammie MacCloud (gen:LOCK)
I mean, judging by my current main roster, apparently characters who are incredibly emotionally dishonest and/or themed after a superpredator of some kind and/or themed after a celestial body.
Since I have Yamato, a wolf-themed, moon-themed character who pretends to be much colder and grumpier than he actually is; and Eden, a lion-themed, sun-themed character who pretends to be much warmer and more cheerful than he actually is.
I'm a terrible sucker for Determinators (link goes to TV Tropes, may God have mercy upon your soul free time). There's something about people who won't give up, no matter how heavily outnumbered or the personal cost, that appeals to me.
More generally, I love women who defy expectations, and people who refuse to take themselves/other people/life too seriously. There's a reason my first and most long-standing pup is Sam Linnfer, who thinks Buddha looks like a guinea pig and criticises Odin's fashion sense as Odin's trying to kill him.
Morally ambiguous anti-heroes; bad people who are begrudgingly compelled to do good; small people who are underestimated but do big things (i.e. the Frodo type); those who are marginalized, outsiders, broken in some way, and/or have an addiction or obsession (currently enamored with Elementary's Sherlock Holmes).
(Also, so sorry for disappearing yet again, just trying to pull my brain back together.)
I definitely have a Type: - Tends to be a secondary character - Tends to be a Hidden Badass - Usually could fall into the 'Hufflepuff' category without too much effort - Tends to be something of a smartass - Less explained characters in a detailed 'verse (hi Cecil, we're talking about you)
For a long while I trended towards Scientific as well, but it gets tiring doing Science all the time. Though it was a close call between apping Cecil here, and Carlos. If 'It Devours' had been out when I was apping, there might be a Scientist in the bar instead of a Radio Host. Though, IDK, Science in Night Vale hurts my head almost more than trying to explain Cecil's timeline.
I, too, like dorky scientists and curious science-adjacent types. I also like nonhumans, and kind-hearted traumatized superhuman killing machines. (Bastion's really the only example of that last type I've apped but it's an archetype that shows up in my favourite characters in general.)
Oh, I'm also starting to develop a pattern of certain kinds of lady leads. I'm not sure I could entirely put my finger on what it is precisely. But there's a list of young women trying to leave a mark on the world that I'm really going for lately.
EDIT: OH ALSO DADS. I HAVE A THING ABOUT DADS. Especially morally ambiguous, potentially-emotionally-fail dads, usually with somewhat broken relationships with at least a son and possibly other children too.
- Survived some trauma or horrible thing in their past, but still struggle to bring good to the world. Bonus points if they sometimes think of themselves as monsters. - Teleporters - Magic users - Lately, non binary or queer folks. This literally just happened to me with Gen: Lock without my even knowing the character was genderfluid before the reveal. - Snarks a lot....like a lot

I play binary-gendered characters too, but a character rejecting or standing apart from the gender binary seems to be the express lane to my heart.
