wednesday DE sub

Hello folks! It’s Hump-DAAAAAY and Bat is stepping in for today’s DE.

Oh, it’s also May Day, which I just had to Google because I never actually knew what May Day was. Since it’s a spring thing and spring is about new beginnings let’s go with that.

Today’s Topic: Has your character had any ‘new beginnings’ in their life? A point when they got the chance, or maybe they had to, start over.

Would they like to have a second (or third, or fourth... ) chance and what would they do with it if they did? Either ideally or in reality, or both if you feel like giving us both.

... heh.

Outside of the usual circumstances of their world, Nichola's never really had to start over in a literal sense. Metaphorically, it's been a pretty good ride. A certain someone has a habit of making her lose jobs, but it's always resulted in moving up instead of starting over.

Wilford doesn't want to talk about it. Ever. Don't look at him like that.

Ahsoka has a couple of fresh starts in her canon. The first was when she left teh Jedi Order at the end of Season 05 of the Clone Wars. Then later, after Order 66, she goes into hiding and through a few events rediscovers her calling and joins the growing Rebel Alliance.

Sabine has a couple of fresh starts as well. First was when she left Mandalor and became a bounty hunter. Then later, and the better fresh start, when she was accepted into the Ghost crew.

Yamato hasn't, really, but there was a part of him that definitely thought he had when he was first brought to the Digital World as a kid. He'd been dropped in a place where late-90s Japan's severe social stigmas against children of divorcees and mixed race kids no longer applied, where Hiroaki's negligence was no longer a factor, where his skills at strategising and fighting made him valuable, and most importantly, where he had his brother back.

While he goes along with the group's 'We Need To Get Back Home' goal because it's what's best for Takeru and the others, I don't think he ever actually expresses any nostalgia for his life in Odaiba. If he'd first gone to the Digital World when he was older, he'd probably feel different, but for a small child who feels completely isolated at home, the Digital World really felt like a new start.

And then the Odaiba arc of 01 hits, and brings with it the realisation that he never got a new beginning after all, and everything he hated about his life was just waiting for him to get back.

Gabumon, meanwhile, actually does get a new beginning! In very literal terms, because Reboot.
configuration_birdwatcher: Bastion examining a twig while under the control of their combat protocols. (tactical analysis: it's a twig)

Bastion's character stems almost entirely from an experience like that. In the last battle they participated in during the robot war, a glancing blow to the head disconnected their power supply unit and they shut down almost completely intact. 12 years later, Ganymede serendipitously reconnected it while trying to peck the moss and dirt off their head for his nest, waking them up again in what was now a peaceful forest with no other sapient beings around. That was why they had the opportunity to throw off their combat programming.

Being the goddess of rebirth, Amascut was all about second chances. But more broadly she was Judge of the Dead: devouring the most evil and corrupt souls, offering rebirth to the most worthy, and letting everyone else into the afterlife. But for herself, she had a sort of new beginning after returning from the other side of the universe after everyone assumed she was dead. But it wasn't a fresh start exactly; everyone was expecting her to still be the same but she wasn't. Well, there was a second fresh start after her father sacrificed himself and nuked the entire subcontinent, but... yah, neither of these are happy fresh starts, they are just super traumatic events that changed things.

Fairy Fixit moved into a home of her own! That was a happy fresh start!

Yes, there's been at least one major restart on Cecil's life. But Cecil doesn't know about it. Even when directly confronted with the knowledge of it, he fails to even remotely recognize it later. If asked, he'd say that he's fine with the way his life is now, and with (almost) everything in it.

...

In other news, today's new episode of Night Vale killed me. I am now a ghost. It needs to be the 15th NOW and they need to fix what they've done or... idk. There'll be crying, I'm sure.

This is a great question.

For Cassian, he's had a few, not all of them good but definitely beginnings. When the Clone Wars came to Fest and his parents dying (they happen closely enough together they're really one event), when he joined the Rebellion, finding a new purpose and place, finding Kay and then when canon happens with Jyn creating something new that he doesn't truly see until the end.

Charles-when his telepathy manifested, as an adult, he can barely remember not being a telepath, when Raven came into his life, then when he met Moira who led him to Erik, the beach in Cuba.

Quentin-when he was fostered to Shadowed Hills, when he met Toby and Blind Michael-everything around Blind Michael is full of complex events that changed how he perceived his world.

Moist-Running away from home and I think the first time he pulled off a job, later there will be canon.

Sameth-Becoming Wallmaker is a huge one for him, there's truly a before and an after, also true of the cricket attack.

Will S.-Meeting Robin, his hanging, the defeat of the Sheriff

William-the War and Yuma

Ivan-I think a lot for him is deeply connected to Miles' moments but for himself, meeting Tej

Demeter-Hades and Persephone, everything is connected to that

Tumnus-the Pevensies and Aslan's return
