Monday DE: The naming of cats is a difficult matter

So I've been re-reading Chris Wooding's Poison, a meta-tastic fantasy story set in a world where children choose their own names when they come of age. The protagonist, primarily out of stubbornness and a desire to spite her stepmother, names herself Poison. So -

If your pup had a different name to the one they have, or if they had to pick their own name, what would it be?

Klaus would pick something really, extremely, stupidly hard to pronounce. Maybe that way the dead wouldn't learn how to scream it.

You know. A guy can hope.

Kanan did choose his own name in canon. His birth name (or at least, the name he had before) was Caleb Dume. He took on the name Kanan Jarrus after Order 66. He named himself in part for Janus Kasmir, a Kalleran man who helped him survive in the immediate aftermath of Order 66.

And it's actually my headcanon that Hera also chose her own name. Due to a complicated bit of worldbuilding to force canon to make sense, I invented that Twi'leks also have a custom that children are called by various nicknames until they're around 4 years old, when they have a rite-of-passage kind of ceremony in which they declare their chosen name and gender, and adopt a clan name. There are certain linguisticy rules about what can be a name, and Hera's (this is all made up) is derived from the verb "heraal" which means "to carry."

As of the retcon, Wilford is an alias. He’s also used Wilson, and a few other W names I can’t remember. His real name is William.

So, uh. I guess one of those.

It's my headcanon that Emcee chose to be called by his title once he embodied his role at the Kit Kat Klub. Any other normal name would just be too mundane for him.

Cassidy chose to be known simply as Cassidy when he arrived in America. It's actually his last name. His first name is Proinsias. Which is why nobody can ever know.

Ahsoka goes by Ashla post-Order 66 and before pulling herself up to start fighting for hope in the galaxy again. I don't know that the name has a meaning in universe, but it was the original name Lucas had for the Light Side of the Force in early drafts of what would become Star Wars: A New Hope. Once she decided to work with the Rebel Alliance, she chose the codename Fulcrum to be the center point with which forces would move around.

Jessica has used many fake names I am sure, but I think Miriaum is one she particularly close to her as it's her mother's name. She doesn't use it often as she never wants to have to leave it behind.

Oh, I forgot! Tybalt was actually born and named Rand. When he became a king of cats, he chose Tybalt for his name. Seanan hasn't explained why he chose Tybalt*, but I know he's a fan of theater and Shakespeare, so I assume it's to honor the Bard (see "Romeo and Juliet").

*That I know of. I'm a Patreon short story or two behind.

Tess has gone by Tess Mercer since she was abut 5 and a half. Before that, she was Lutessa Lena Luthor. She likes Tess better.

Rose likes Rose and wishes it was her real name.

Kylo has already done that.

Creed's name is Victor, of course, and he doesn't really care which one he goes by. So long as it's not 'Sabretooth'.

Sherlock's full name is William Sherlock Scott Holmes. He goes by his middle name. (Jim, and only Jim, may call him anything he likes.)
