Thursday DE: Ball Ball

Are there any canon sports or other communal events your pup enjoys?

Or is there such from a canon you love but don't currently play?

Amascut occasionally plays Werewolf Skullball, which doesn't really involve werewolves necessarily, it's just that Skullball is mostly only popular in werewolf country. Think of it like croquet, except that the "ball" is lumpy, the ground is bumpy, the ball is kicked rather than being hit with a mallet, and the game is more of a time trail. The more unpredictable the roll of the ball, the better. A werewolf skull would be excellent in this regard, but that is usually considered ghoulish in the few places where Skullball itself isn't considered ghoulish.

There are only a few other sports in canon, unless I count some of the minigames as sports. A non-minigamesport is gnomeball, which is... all the footballs, rugby included? Well, all the footballs except for Skullball. The minigame that is most sport-like is Cabbage Facepunch Bonanza, which is a very silly way to say British Bulldog. Heist is basically Cops and Robbers with very good disguises for the Robbers (sort of like a GMod Guess Who or Prop Hunt game).

There are plenty of others, most involving combat, but among them, I think only Trouble Brewing would interest my other pup, Fairy Fixit. And only if it were televised. It's a competitive 'rum' brewing competition and is just the sort of reality TV drama that might catch her attention. The actual game doesn't reward sabotaging the other team very much, but a couple of mean-spirited impractical people can easily cause so much drama.

While the anime doesn't go into detail about what sports Yamato plays -- just that he plays some kind of sport, as his character profiles for each series always go to pains to point out that he's a grotesquely skilled athlete -- the novels and audio dramas do! Yamato does boxing and swimming. This is not wholly surprising, given that he's visibly the strongest swimmer in canon and equally visibly the most likely to punch someone in the face.

It's probably not a coincidence that those are both largely solitary sports, where you will probably train with other people and might even compete as a team (such as in a relay or in a team boxing tournament), but in the actual moment you're exclusively relying on yourself and your own skills.

Chances are good that he's also learned just enough of the other Chosen's sports to help them practice. He can function as a goalkeeper if Taichi (or Koushiro, who does play football, fandom, this is canon) needs to practice football, he can just about manage in tennis if Sora needs to practice with someone, and he's a decent enough basketball player to put Takeru through his paces. He'll never be particularly good at any of those, but he's good enough to act as a warm body when the others need to get some training in.

He lives in perpetual fear that Sora, who seems to rapidly master every sport she tries, will one day turn her eye to his sports of choice. Don't do this, Sora. Be merciful.
