100 words for Zuko:

His daughter is born in the fall, as the Ginko trees drop their golden leaves, echoing the color of the eyes that his life has been graced with. There is much fuss; friends and loved ones travel in from all over – he is, after all, the first one to become a father – not that Aang and Katara haven’t been trying since they married.

The shining star, though, is Iroh – always Iroh. Who else would teach him how to perfectly warm bottled milk between his hands, making it perfect for his precious new child to drink? Zuko owes him so much.

Zenigata hates Christmas in France; it is big lights, rich food, and caroles everywhere. Nothing like home, where Christmas eve is a romantic holiday for couples, and Christmas day is just for gift giving with no religion really attached to it. It’s also his birthday. It’s like fanfare leading up to a day where nobody will give him second thoughts.

He volunteers to work the holidays. He gets some of his best work done over them – alone with no other demands he files paperwork and reconciles the books for the last year. That’s worth being a fossil forgotten by the rest of his life.

Yata tapped the frame of his door to get his attention and permission to enter.

Zenigata didn’t look up. “Yes, Yata?”

“Just had a delivery drop off,” Yata said, holding a takeout bag by its handles, one hand under it to support. “Feels pretty warm, too. Did you order takeout?”

“On Christmas eve? Never,” Zenigata said, before he accepted it. “I’ll go open it up in the breakroom, see if it’s edible.”

“Alright,” Yata said, letting him go. “Enjoy your dinner, sir.”

Leaving Yata to continue his work, Zenigata found the breakroom, with its it’s offensively festive educations: Christmas, Hannukah, Kwanza, and other winter holidays represented on a table celebrating the diversity of the office. He went right past it, settled at a table, and started to unbox the delivery.

The contents were simple: a huge bowl of broth, another container or noodles, and several smaller packages that went with it with vegetables and a onsen egg. There were a variety bag of flavored Kit Kats from home that Europeans would never understand, shrimp chips, and other sweet and savory treats.

Of course, there was a note taped to one of the bags: Eat it while it’s piping hot, Pops!

Of course, it was Lupin’s handwriting.

Of course, he’d remember.

Zenigata looked at the little bundle, and then sat down and checked each container carefully for mean-spirited pranked or other little cruelties and found none. Satisfied, he put the noodles in the hot soup, moved the vegetables to where they needed to be, and laid out the slices of chashu in.

“Itadakimasu!” he said to the empty room, and dug into the bowl of ramen, savoring the rich broth as it warmed his belly.

Sometimes the thief did good. Sometimes. Zenigata would arrest him a little more gently, next time. But only a little. He still had to be the inspector, and Lupin still had to be implacable foe. But for now, he was the only one who remembered the old man’s birthday, and showed him a little favor on it.

That was worth not throwing him around too hard, next time they met.
