But here he was.
And it turns out, it was a good thing - while he adores the flock of juniors he's been running into now and again, they do seem to have a unique talent in getting into spectacular amounts of trouble. He could have hardly let two of his favorite Lans and his absolutely most favorite Jin get murdered by a yao, now could he? No matter how big and ugly the thing had been. And he hadn't meant to call up Wen Ning, though he supposes he should have guessed Wen Ning would be in the area, what with Lan Sizhui (his a-Yuan!) here. But at least his presence is explainable. He has been travelling for months, and could be anywhere, including right here. The juniors came here on purpose (if a bit foolhardedly, he'll need to send a letter to Lan Zhan and complain).
So really, Jiang Cheng is the only one who had no reason to be so far away from Lotus Pier, and here he was, shouting.
"... and you had to barge in here, endangering them with that Wen-dog..." Jiang Cheng was in full ranting force now, and Wei Ying knows that at least half of what is coming out of his mouth is complete nonsense (it always becomes complete nonsense at some point), but that doesn't mean it doesn't hurt. Wei Ying takes a step to the side to stand between the man who was once his shidi and the man who is now his friend.
"Aiya, I thought you liked dogs, Jiang Cheng." He interrupts, deliberately baiting. "And of all the ones I've met, this one isn't even scary. But if he bothers you so much, we'll be going." He figures he can circle around and say hello to the Juniors later, once Jiang Cheng has ensured that Jin Ling is still in one piece, and had his fill of scolding. He waves over his shoulder as Jiang Cheng rages that Wei Wuxian should stay and help permanently disperse the yao he helped subdue, but he just slings an arm around Wen Ning's shoulders and walks on, mentally apologizing to his shijie. Looks like that reconciliation is going to be a bit more delayed, isn't it?

Jin Guangyao - Holding the baby

"What happened?" Wei-gongzi asked when he turned from where he had been planting lotus seedlings and saw them clinging to each other.
"The usual elbow thing," Wen Ning says, needing no more explanation.
A-Yuan looked up to swivel his eyes between the two of them. So the 'elbow thing' was 'usual'?
"Oh, the elbow thing!" Wei-gongzi said, grinning at Wen Ning. "The one where your pull isn't straight and the bowstring twangs off crooked, hits the inside of your elbow and gives you an gigantic bruise that will turn all sorts of fantastic colours over the next week? That elbow thing?"
A-Yuan nodded at the same time as Wen Ning, who already felt less guilty at having allowed such a thing to happen to the little one.
"Only one thing you can do against that."
A-Yuan had stopped sniffling and tilted his head at his Xian-gege expectantly.
"Pick up your bow and try again. Show it who's boss!"

This time, it's his own baby, and he is the boss of the whole place, so Jin Guangyao can hold little A-Song, Jin Rusong in full when he gets afforded a courtesy name (never, but only his father knows that yet) as much as he wants.
And he finds he doesn't. After what he has learned about his wife's hidden lineage, he can't let this little proof of his profound shame grow up for all to see. When he holds his baby son, there are only two things Jin Guangyao can think of: a) can one already see how defective the child must necessarily become and b) that he mustn't get attached, mustn't feel happy or proud or protective.
So he passes the baby on to the next person who wants to hold him, and at this instant it happens to be Lan Xichen, who coos at the baby and smiles down at him with his absolutely beatific smile, the one that makes his lips curl up sweetly and his eyes shine brightly with genuine happiness at the remarkable moment he is witnessing. Jin Guangyao always feels proud when he can conjure that special smile onto his Er-ge's face, but not now.
Now he can only think of how disappointed and heart-broken Xichen-ge will be when this comes all to naught, when the stories he meant to tell, the gifts he meant to make with his own hands, and the skills he meant to teach his A-Yao's son all come to nothing.
Better end this soon before it can make Xichen cry.
The entire ficlet is a) one gigantic spoiler to those who don't know the canon, and b) so potentially painful by implication to those who do, I'm putting all of it in whitetext. Read at own risk.

So yes, I need a 50 chapter fic of this, bonus points if it happens prior to the Jin's party so it can go AU before Burial Mounds Pt 2 becomes a thing.

However, even that one would branch out long before poor Jin Rusong.

while stalking the Way's Back Like You Do, but I absolutely, madly miss Fic Friday's and writing character fics, and it was only like six days ago, and so even if there's a chance no one will see this, I'm just going to drop a wash of names for any potential prompts.Milliways Favs
