Monday DE: Canon, shmanon

Afternoon, all, and welcome to yet ANOTHER Monday! I know, I didn't authorise this either.

What are your particular pet peeves or what bugs you the most about your characters' established canons, backstories, etc.? Do you tolerate it, ignore it, or plan on fixing it - and if so, how?

Zenigata: Well, I'm giving him a consistent characterization, for one. But honestly Lupin runs on negative continuity, so all versions are valid and no versions are valid. It's worse than comics like that.

Zuko: NGL, if I could erase Katara And Aang's marriage i'd do it. That whole end of ATLA where she got handled to a twelve year old like a trophy for beating the fire lord was always gross to me. Even 15+ years later when i'm like 'Zutara? What?' i still think that ending was gross. However, all of the rest of canon is based off it, sooooooooo can't do anything about it.

Lan Zhan: other than weaving in some book canon to cloes some gaps/make sense of things? I'm okay with it.

Vex: So normally I'm 100% about canon queer ships. Vex gets involved with a young man in season 5, and normally? I'd be here for it. Except:

Mark is literally 21. Vex is over 900, and is even referred to as entering Fae middle age, so -- you know, basically 40. Mark's never even been through his first shape-shift, and doesn't know his heart's beast shape. I absolutely cannot get on board with this relationship. Mark is younger than the mortal that Vex had been raising and protecting in secret, and you think he's going to stick his dick in that or find it attractive? Nah, bro, no. Did I like the guilt and conflict Vex was getting and him wanting to e a better man and being confused at his own heart? Yeah. Did I like him doing it for a Literal 20 Year Old, not a Fae Equivalent of 20 Year Old? Nah. So that crush/relationship is just not happening.

Now I know it was terrible rushed since they got the word they were getting the axe mid-season 5 (sadness) so they had to cram two+ seasons of Vex development in there with what they had AND get their canon MLM ship (Lost Girl surprised everyone with the wlw ship going endgame! in 2015!) but at the same time: nah. just nah.

Lupin's been around since some guy in the sixties wanted to get paid to draw sex scenes, so he wrote nextgen fanfiction about this French thief from the 20s, and now 55ish years later here we are. There's a LOT of Lupin, particularly the older stuff, that's incredibly, astoundingly racist, sexist, homo/transphobic, and rape culturey. Fortunately the canon's so fluid that you can just write around it moving forward but it makes watching some of the older stuff...rough.

Jessica Drew: Roger is good for Jess but I just don't see him as romantic material for her. Also, let her date a woman. She's obviously bi, let her date a woman! Jessifer (Jess and Jennifer Walters) would be fun if I can't have CarolJess.

Ahsoka: I really wish she'd shown a lot less of the "clones are disposable unless they are Rex" attitude. Regarding her Mandalorian appearance, while I was a little grumpy about her wearing a costume more in line with the Siege of Mandalore than her appearance at the end of Rebels, I am more upset about her montrals being teen-sized rather than the adult size we saw in Rebels. I know Rosario is a contentious casting but we are stuck with it, so please get her some fencing and gymnastics training if you mean to have her fight again.

I very much dislike the end of Star Wars Rebels and whenever we get around to it we are definitely planning some changes! We've also already put Hera and Kanan into a more romantic relationship because the way it was handled in the show was... weird. Meh.

Many people are also just very bad at writing Hera, honestly most of the time because they're dudes who can't seem to write female characters outside the strict archetypes of 'mommy' and 'cool action girl' or possibly 'spunky teen.' I'd like to see more Hera but more than once I've ended up just feeling like 'nm leave her alone.'

I uh, also disliked what happened with Poe in TROS, and made up some thing where he had done something undercover for the New Republic instead, just to better reconcile all that in my head.
