So far this has mostly come up for the Don't Starve characters; the main thing that motivates me to write canon OOMs is when I want to show a major jump in the character's outside-the-bar circumstances - particularly one with story progression - that has too many important components to simply summarise or imply in the narration of an EP. I also lean a bit more heavily on retelling canon for more obscure canons like Don't Starve or Fallen London than more mainstream ones like Overwatch, because I can't hint or vaguely gesture at stuff that happened in canon and expect everybody reading the thread to connect the dots if it's that much less likely that they've even seen the original dots.
I find it really depends on the pup and their canon, not to mention my energy levels.
Some pups just want a place to hang out and not worry about what is happening back home. Others want their story told, though usually, I get myself wrapped up in canon rather than deciding on the big character beats to use. I'd likely get more done if I just decided to do the big character beats rather than assuming no one is partaking of the same media and so it is up to me to make sure the narrative is whole.
Belated response - I like to tell the parts of the story that are either missing pieces or major story elements with additional perspective(s) and insights.
