There's only one pup of mine who has a really interesting answer to this DE.
Murderbot has onboard digital memory banks, in which it can save both experiences and data. If asked, it might lie and say it remembers everything, but it doesn't - who would want that? It actively manages and prunes its memory banks by going through them every so often to delete things it doesn't need, de-duplicate and generalize redundant things, index things, save important things to permanent memory, etc.
But it didn't always have control over its memory. When it owned by a megacorporation, the company wiped Murderbot's memory banks and restored them to factory settings every so often for various reasons - as part of routine maintenance, to meet the requirements of NDAs, or as part of covering up something really bad that company assets (like Murderbot) were involved in.
Murderbot knows it was involved in at least one really bad incident and had its memory banks wiped afterwards: it re-investigated the incident years later. But it doesn't know if it has been involved in any other such incidents or how many times the company wiped its memory. There's a lot of its life that it just doesn't remember (it doesn't even know how much, as Murderbot doesn't remember how old it is). That may be for the best, as most of its life consisted of boredom punctuated with horror.
But anyway. TL;DR version, Murderbot has both a very good memory, and a very terrible memory.
Wei Wuxian has a very selective memory. Wrongs against himself he mostly forgets. People he loves he remembers forever. Cultivation theory/technique/history are in forever. Insults/crimes against people he loves are remembered until the end of time, with interest. This of course, leads to the reality that Wei Wuxian cannot remember, for the life of him, the name of the Jin Cousin who has styled himself as the personal nemesis of the feared Yiling Patriarch. Like, not a clue.
Klaus has a shitty memory, but that's the trauma and drugs talking. Sorry.
Cecil has a variable memory. He often remembers things he shouldn't, and forgets things that should be unforgettable, and has memories that directly contradict each other. It's fun!
Jon has a normal memory, he guesses. It seems to be just fine.
