So, what's up with the sudden surge of people posting into the bar saying, basically, "I'm not actually here, but there's my character! Look! A character with whom you cannot interact!"

This is a role playing game. That means you're supposed to play. Posting without being able to play just overloads the bar, and it's kinda annoying.

I know it's sometimes for plot, and hey, far be it from me to stand in the way of plot, but why else would you want to do it? Any explanations would be welcome, for I totally do not understand.

I don't know, but it makes for a lot of unnecessary clutter. I don't enter the Bar unless I've got at least 4 hours set aside to play, personally. But that's me.

This made me boggle at first, until I realized I normally set aside six to eight hours myself... *headdesk*

Indeed, Gazza. :P

I think for some people the rationale is "I can't play right now but my character's theoretically supposed to be in the bar, so look, there he/she is doing X." I don't personally feel the need to justify Tonks' whereabouts 24/7, but I think that's where some people might be coming from. *shrug*

Usually when this stuff happens for me, it's because I get called away unexpectedly. I'm not sure if that's the sort of thing that you're talking about, but even if a player isn't there, there's always the possibility of slowtiming.

But yeah, it seems kind of silly to say, "Hey, here's my character!" and then not be able to RP.

I think it's mostly the people playing a Bound character - you might have very few explanations for long absences, depending on the particular character, but at the same time, you simply don't have time to pay. So to keep it as realistic as possible, you establish that yes, X is still around, where else would he be?

If you see what I mean. :D

Sometimes that sort of thing is done to handle a plot point -- your character *has* to be there to at least observe the event that is about to occur, but you-the-mun need to finish the last of your assignment before play, and will likely be unable to do normal threads though you'll make it in time to establish the character's presence in the plottyness.

*shrug* just a thought.
