There is an idea, and for it to succeed we need your help. Almost every canon has some saying, phrase, whatever, that expresses the sentiment that yes, bad things happen, no we don't know why, just get over it. These sayings can be particular to a canon, like Moiraine's "The Wheel weaves as it will." Or perhaps particular to a character in a canon. Either way.

Post and tell us your characters' sayings here.

Does "absolute destiny apocalypse" count?

[identity profile] anthy-rosebride.livejournal.com 2005-03-13 07:14 am (UTC)(link)
Went through my 12 pups. None. :(

What's the idea? *curious*

I can't believe I'm actually replying to this, but...

We got to get over the hump. (http://www.leoslyrics.com/listlyrics.php;jsessionid=72938A511CB56FD7C9C021666A9A6742?hid=sQ31tf71efQ%3D)

*pounces*

The big one--the big one, in DT, is, of course, "Ka." With lots of variations, such as "Ka like a wind." and, if you're pissed off about something, "Fucking ka." :D

There's also "There'll be water if God wills it."

And possibly others I'm failing to remember because yay, sleep deprivation.

[identity profile] lord-of-dreams.livejournal.com 2005-03-13 07:12 am (UTC)(link)
Amroth Milliways al'i'on-Arithon. "The Brotherhood of Milliways belongs to fate"

I don't think the rest of them say anything. Dream just looks inscrutable.

*shrugs*

Ineffable.

This may not be canon specifically, but it's, um, general French? :p

*pulls out the DT Concordances and starts listing*

All things serve the Beam.
Argyou not about the hand you are delt in cards or in life.
Bad times are on horseback.
Do bumblers learn to speak backward? No more than cats change their spots.
Ka is a wheel.
The world has moved on.
There will be water if God wills it.
Time is a face on the water.
Why is a crooked letter and can't be made straight.
About the great matters, you have no say.
All things serve ka and follow the Beam.
Here we are, and ka stands to one side and laughs. We must do as it wills or pay the price.
Ka has no heart or mind.
Ka like a wind.
Ka speaks and the wind blows.
Ka works and the world moves on.
Ka would tell, it always did.
Life is a wheel and we all say thankya.
We spread the time as we can, but in the end the world takes it all back.
In the end the ground cures all.

[identity profile] key-youth-bert.livejournal.com 2005-03-13 07:33 am (UTC)(link)
...And this is why I should leave the canon-question-answering to you.

*lusts after the Concordance*

Merlin's beard!

Seriously, I can't think of any for HP.

Temple and arch is an all purpose OMGWTF saying for Neverwhere, so I think that might work.

[identity profile] indy-go.livejournal.com 2005-03-13 07:42 am (UTC)(link)
"Merlin knows..."

I think that works pretty well. :D

Will, in The Grey King: "There are shadows in the pattern, as well as sunlight."

[identity profile] sign-seeker.livejournal.com 2005-03-13 10:36 am (UTC)(link)
That's not so much a catchphrase as something he talks about periodically, but yeah. :) Get an Old One started on about choices and the long pattern and you'll get something along those lines.

"Hope is an anchor."

Depressing, but true.

"The slotted spoon won't hold much soup, but the slotted spoon can catch the potato."

"Sometimes the things you most wish for are not to be touched."

"Opportunity is not a lengthy visitor, and good fortune, like bad, can befall when least expected."

"Even flowers have their dangers."

Yes, the whole bloody cast talks in aphorisms. What do you want from me?

[identity profile] andy-longwood.livejournal.com 2005-03-14 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
XD I spent at least a whole scene explaining that first one to one of the stepsisters when I was Jack's Mom the year before last.

"The slotted spoon won't hold much soup, but it can catch the potato!"

". . . what?"

"It's about Jack."

"Jack's a spoon?"

"Yes. And he's slotted. Which means he's stupid. So he can't hold soup."

". . ."

"The soup is things like money."

"Oooh."

"But he can catch stuff that counts, like giants."

"And the giant is the potato."

"Right."

Henry is a vampire. And Canadian (currently). He probably just shrugs.

Nita, hmm. . . "There are no accidents" might work. Otherwise, there's "If time has a heart, it is because other hearts die" (Timeheart being the wizard's version of heaven).

[identity profile] timsbooks.livejournal.com 2005-03-13 08:21 am (UTC)(link)
Tim seems to have picked up "The Bar serves as it will." from somewhere. and from cannon, the oft qouted "Do you belive in magic?"

In the Cheysuli world, there's Tahlmorra lujhala mei wiccan, cheysu. Or, "the fate of a man rests always within the hands of the gods." All of the Cheysuli contingent, of which I am four, would say it.

Just so happens I'm signed in as a car right now.

"May you live in Interesting times" is a curse, but it doesn't seem relevent.

I can't think of a Disc equivalent of "Shit happens" right now, because Disc characters don't really think like that.

[identity profile] chains-of-irony.livejournal.com 2005-03-13 01:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Irrelevent, but I love how Rincewind always wakes up with a blood-curdling scream, just to get it over with for the day. I can't think of a Discworld phrase either.

pluvio en laggo, which means 'water in the lake'. As in it's, 'it's all pluvio en laggo now'. Of course, that's more 'it happened, nothing we can do, get over it' then 'it's happening' or 'will happen'.
