(no subject)

How many males *are* playing at Milliways? I'm counting four, currently - Sirius, Dionysus, Destruction, and Rupert. Am I missing anyone?

I am horribly curious. (In the event of an alien invasion, how prepared would this planet's defenses be?) Tell meee!!

Are you speaking of actual male people playing characters, or male characters?

In terms of characters, there's also Bernard, Tom, Lord Peter, Peter Pettigrew, Regulus, Kalos, Dream, the Angels, Constantine, and I'm sure I'm forgetting at least one or two. Oh! Wolverine and the Corinthian, though the Corinthian is technically a nightmare.

I'm sure I'm forgetting at least one or two.

I can add Hob Gadling and the late Paul Morlock to that list. And Raphael is male, albeit not a male human.

More characters - Mat, Rosencrantz, Guildenstern, Gil, Charlie Weasley, Neville Longbottom, Fate, Spike, Lucifer, Brad Crawford, Lestat, Will Stanton, Merriman Lyon, The Fool, Jack Sparrow, Glorfindel, Luke Skywalker, Rodya, Sario, Billy Tallent, Joe Dick...

I know there are others...

Basically, if there are any women at Milliways who want to be getting some but aren't, they have no excuses.

Well, some of the guys are tangled up with either each other or girls, so not all of them can be used as no-excuses stuff. Otherwise, though, yeah.

[identity profile] pubdog.livejournal.com 2004-07-22 07:44 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, how could I forget them? Wah. *is no good at memory things.*

If we're talking in terms of players, the mun for Malcolm Reynolds ([livejournal.com profile] madriker) is a guy, too. He was only around one night, and I doubt he'll be back. *snrk*

I really liked Mal. Hope Raph didn't scare him away.
*le sigh*

[identity profile] muddypetticoats.livejournal.com 2004-07-22 07:54 am (UTC)(link)
No, if he in fact doesn't come back, it'll have had nothing to do with you.

He kinda joined because he was trying to get me to date him, and he found out I played here. The dating thing isn't happening, so... yeah.

I'm holding out for you, babe. *bats eyelashes*

Alas, poor Peter when he discovers that his beloved Liz is longing for turtle porn!

[identity profile] goodnightjulia.livejournal.com 2004-07-22 01:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Find out what happens next week, on "As The Universe Turns"

[identity profile] goodnightjulia.livejournal.com 2004-07-22 02:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Dammit! I always get my soaps confused (and my mind just wandered off onto a tangent of cleaning).

I'm sorry! I was lurking yesterday. And laughing. Luna was feeling the effects of her nightmare, yes that's it...

[identity profile] goodnightjulia.livejournal.com 2004-07-22 02:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Wah! I'm sorry! *plays* Luna's coming in soon, and will be Most Displeased that she missed the Nekkie Swimming.

I saw that! *cackle* It was beautiful, but my first reaction to that post is "Must. Hug. Ophelia. Waaaaahhhhpoorlostlittledeadgirl." Ophelia makes me so sad. Crazy little dead flower girl.

[identity profile] muddypetticoats.livejournal.com 2004-07-22 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, but Liz has already participated in turtle molestation! As for the turtle porn, though... she's too much of a lady. Besides, I think Peter's got bigger things to worry about.

I was talking to Death...or was it Rosmerta?... the other day, about how this is the first gaming experience I've ever had where the female puppeteers outnumber the male.

It's a nice change.

[identity profile] copperbadge.livejournal.com 2004-07-22 07:45 am (UTC)(link)
You've clearly never RP'd in the Harry Potter universe *grins* I was the only male player on my last RP, although there were only four female characters....

Are we talkin' online gaming? Or actual table top/Larp?

Maybe the online thing has more women than men, cause the RL thing has such scary men involved in it?

Especially the White Wolf universe, which is the cock rock of gaming. What? I'm just sayin'.

[identity profile] copperbadge.livejournal.com 2004-07-22 08:03 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, online. I've never played tabletop; I'd have no clue how :D

[identity profile] hal9000a.livejournal.com 2004-07-22 08:05 am (UTC)(link)
It's much the same, only with unnecessarily complicated dice and tables to determine if you're actually going to do what you say. In most LARPS, the dice are replaced with a heart-rending game of rock/paper/scissors.

[identity profile] copperbadge.livejournal.com 2004-07-22 08:06 am (UTC)(link)
ROFL. I had friends who played both, but the dice scared me off :D

[identity profile] hal9000a.livejournal.com 2004-07-22 10:03 am (UTC)(link)
It wasn't the dice that scared me so much as the min/max gamers (the gamers who eliminate their odds of failure with Science! and Progress!)

Bleh.

I suppose I should also take the opportunity to represent since I've not gotten a nod as a male character or player. It's an interesting house.

*snicker*
Table top just requires dice (gamers are notorious for being overly protective of their dice. Mine are currently sitting at the bottom of my 90 gallon aquarium. They were bad), and a merit called "Common Sense". Common sense allows you to ask the GM any number of stupid questions with no penalty.

It's also suggested you play a dumb character who likes to hit things. Okay, well it's suggested by me, cause that's what I do when I'm not sure what's going on. *smirk*

Hmm. I think it depends a little on which online format, too. This LJ format is the first one I've been involved with that has more women players than men. Caveat: I haven't been obsessively involved with places like Ultima and Asheron's Call, so I can't speak for certain about those. My previous online RPG experience was through places like JediMUD, etc., some time ago.

RL/tabletop, I'm involved in one game right now (MERP) where the women outnumber the men, but that's the first time I've seen that happen, ever, in several years of gaming (off and on).

*is complete geek* *facepalm*

Man, I'm wicked envious of your girl campaign.
But, if you'll excuse me, the roll of the die said I have to hide my head in shame.

Not all online gaming is female-dominated. I had a friend who was trying to do an anthropological study of a Star Wars chatroom community in which almost every player was male. Players were valued based on their knowledge of and ability to use weapons. Those few female characters (usually also female players) within the community almost always had power through their beauty, gentleness and availability as sexual objects (or, conversely, as beautiful virgins to be courted); if they chose to make their players into fighters, they would be judged more harshly than the men player-characters who fought. Machismo was highly valued. Relationships between players were rare and always heterosexual. The community eventually fell apart in 2001-2002 when several of the most active members joined the army in reaction to the war beginning in Afghanistan.

Obviously, the gender politics here are completely different to those in the chatroom my friend studied. I think next time I want to waste time intellectually, I'll start working on a summary of interactions here as they relate to gender construction. [/anthropology jargon]
