Monday DE: That was a close one

Let's imagine, for a moment, that your character has just had a brush with death. They were convinced their time was up and they were not going to survive the encounter; whether this is someone trying to kill them, a car careening towards them, an industrial accident, giant space monster hungry for flesh, etc. I leave up to you. Things are quiet now. They survived and are alone to react however they need to.

What happens?

For those who can't die, how about if someone or something they care deeply about was in the deadly situation and yet made it.

(Sorry for the gloom the past couple of DEs. Current canon I am reading has me thinking.)
