The Lonely Canons Edition.

From Esther: Since app season is coming up, how many people here have pups that are the only ones from their canon?

I add to this: What sorts of pups are you looking forward to apping this go-round?

FYI -- the correct answer to question number two is 'Every Eureka pup ever'. Just so's you know.

P.S. - I will take this opportunity to shamelessly shout that people should APP FROM THE RED STAR, PLEASE. I will offer first-borns and paid accounts to anyone who apps Kyuzo, Alex, or Urik!

The Red Star is a fantasy alternate history Soviet Russia, with mile-long warships, institutionalized magic, a sweeping love story, vast battles, and the most stunning art that I have ever seen in a comic book. (Take a look at the case in point that made me shriek like a banshee when it turned up in my inbox last night.) The story follows Maya Antares, a sorceress-major in the Red Fleet of the former URRS (that's United Republics of the Red Star, and yes, the similarity to USSR is entirely intentional), who was made a widow by the war in Al'Istaan, which is a big-time allegory for the Russia-Afghanistan conflict of the eighties. The other character you'll recognize from Milliways is Makita, a young resistance fighter battling for her people's independence from the former URRS. I can't really summarize the plot any better than that; giving more details just gets spoilery (and on that note, don't read the Wikipedia article if you don't want to get spoiled), but trust me -- it's epic.

I am going to be a lazy, lazy fucker and steal [livejournal.com profile] rushin_doll's words, because I agree whole-heartedly with what he says; I'm pretty sure he won't mind, since they're going to a good cause.

The Red Star is one of those rarely transcendent things that matters in every way it tries to matter. Art, writing, plot, narrative voice and style, social dynamic, thematic content... everything. That's what this book means to me. Of course I've talked before about how much more it is to me: the writing is... well, let's just say that there are parts of the series that literally never fail to bring tears to my eyes despite having read it hundreds of times.

...

Sure I talk about the compelling art and writing. How it's about humanity in a way that nothing else I've encountered is. But I always come up short. I have never, ever managed to capture in writing why this book is so good. I consider it one of my greatest failings because if there's one thing I wish I could get into writing it's why everyone should read this. I sometimes feel that my inability to capture this properly is a failure of you all. I am unable to properly communicate how amazing this is to me, and so you might pass it over where my recommendation of something else might be more coherent and thus more convincing.

And so I fall back on spamming you with art, and pushing the books on you, and begging you to read it. Because I know the work speaks for itself, and I find myself an inadequate spokes-person.

And if anyone's interested in reading it, talk to Ana or me, or order from the Archangel Studios website; The Red Star can be criminally difficult to find in stores.

It varies, really; there are some pretty damn gritty bits, too. I think they purposely picked the prettiest parts of the upcoming issue to show, to drive us all out of our minds, and also because -- the whole comic's been leading to this place, really, and this is the first serious look we get at it. It's a reward to fans to let them see it.

There are gritty bits, but it's mostly just gorgeous, whether gritty or pretty or airy.

And also it is AWESOME.

*had canon shoved at her by Ana, and is very happy to have done so*

............................

I need to establish the characters I have over the next two months in more permanent and interactive fashion than I have, so far, but if I still have slots open for characters by June and either of those three are still not taken, I will gladly app one of them.

I'm trying to be responsible, see, and not nab too many characters before I am sure I can handle all the weight; also, I need to reread the floppies. Again. In case I missed something.

It's not like it's been two years since PRISON OF SOULS ended, or anything.

kkushksdhfLKDSIHFGOLDIHFGDIFG HI WHO ARE YOU LET'S BE FRIENDS PLEASE--

Ahem.

Hi! I'm Lexie, the resident Maya player ([livejournal.com profile] joiningyousoon) and [livejournal.com profile] rushin_doll plays Makita ([livejournal.com profile] runmakitarun), and we've been searching like mad for Alex, Kyuzo, and Urik for ages. Obviously, selfishly, who I really want to see is Kyuzo, but then again, there is Urik with his snark and general awesome, and badass Alex, and eventually, we'll obviously even be looking for [SPOILER!] Marcus, though I'm not entirely sure how we'd work that... I am massively indecisive, and seriously, any one of those first three in particular would thrill both of us beyond belief. I think I can say with pretty decent confidence that none of them will be taken by June (it is, after all, a pretty obscure canon).

We're actually going to be running through the latter half of the first volume, starting this weekend. (Ish. We are not always good with time.) Anyway, we're looking for folk to app, obviously, but we're also looking for people to NPC major characters, so if you might be interested (look at it as a test run!), let me know. :D

And I know, right? It's been ages. "Sword of Lies" has been coming out so slowly; it's killing me.

HELLO, NEW FRIEND.

I'm Todd! I'm slightly new, having only been around since about September/Novemberish of last year, and only recently been getting really active, because I start slow but once I get going I hit RP running. You may've seen me around recently as [livejournal.com profile] burn_to_grow and a few other anime pups, because . . . I noticed a criminal deficiency in those, and felt a need to correct it. Because CARTOONS ARE AWESOME. In my opinion.

So . . . that puts you guys squarely in the middle of the Nokgorka siege, IIRC? Yes? (And like hell if I'd turn a test run down, it certainly couldn't hurt.) Also, time, hahahahaha, I run out of time for everything, I understand completely.

I totally keep forgetting SWORD OF LIES even exists, which means I have none of it so far. :D?

Okay, taking the last point first -- I spy your email in your profile, so there'll be an email winging your way momentarily. :D

Oh, okay! Yes, I totally have seen Kazu around. I've noticed the surge in anime pups, too. Very cool!

Yep, we're at Nokgorka at the moment; Ana's just done the contents of the special issue-thing (I know there is a specific name for what it is, but I'm really not a regular comics person; I totally don't know what to call things), "Run, Makita, Run," and we're set just before issue five, where Alex goes down to Bahamut with the ground assault. One of the first things we'll do will probably be that conversation between Maya, Urik, and Alex that opens the issue. So, basically, we're just before everything goes to hell in several handbaskets. :D
