Dear Delightful Brilliant M'Waysers,

I need your help. My brother's band banquet is coming up fast and the theme is superheroes. My education in superheroes is severely limited... Could you please help me come up with a list of superheroes (X-Men, Superman, The Flaming Carrot, etc...) and their powers? No hero too obvious, no hero too obscure. Also, if you have any superhero theme music that you'd be willing to share, would you please? I'm in charge of the slide show and I don't have enough to go on.

Thank you all!

For the slide show, I'd recommend the theme for the Superman animated series by Bruce Timm & Co. (who work at Warner Brothers).

*goes for the obscure*

The Great Lakes Avengers!

Dinah Soar - She's, like, a strange pterodactyl humanoid with wings!

Mr. Immortal - He's immortal! He gets knocked down, but he gets up again! Even if he's impaled on a pair of giant scissors!

Flatman - He's two dimensional!

Doorman - He can turn his body into a teleporter... to the next room!

Big Bertha - She can manipulate her body to resilient and strong massive flab! Or trim down to supermodel size... but that requires vomiting.

Squirrel Girl - She's got mutant squirrel powers, including buck teeth, a tail, and the ability to communicate with squirrels!

Squirrel Girl.

From here (http://www.marvel.com/universe/Squirrel_Girl):

Idolizing Iron Man, she adopted the costumed identity of Squirrel Girl in the hope of becoming his crime-fighting partner. Upon finally meeting him, she single-handedly defeated Iron Man's nemesis, the despotic Doctor Doom, overwhelming him with the squirrels under her control.

Where to begin?

Firestorm the Nuclear Man - Matter restructuring at an atomic level, flight, energy blasts

The Flash - Runs really fast (see also: Quicksilver, Max Mercury, Fastbak, Jesse Quick, Johnny Quick, Impulse, MPH, XS)

Matter Eater Lad - can eat anything. Really.

The Atom - can shrink to any height from six inches to nanoscopic.

The Confessor - Priest-turned-vampire-turned dark avenger of the night.

Ralph Hinckley - Alien costume grants him flight, invisibility, quasi-psychic powers of cognition and precognition.

Have you tried wikipedia? It has whole pages on Xmen and their powers.

Due to college internet restrictions, I can't share, but Queen did a song called 'Flash' that I believe was a basis for a film (not, I believe, Barry Allen The Flash, a different one).

From Marvel you have Xmen (various powers), Runaways (one witch Niko, super strength mutant Molly, cyborg Victor, alien Katarina), Avengers (original, new, young, various powers), Fantastic 4 (one flamey, one rocky, one stretchy, one invisible), Spiderman and a load of random ones like Cloak and Dagger (teleportation; light shards), Antman (grows and shrinks).

DC have Superman and Batman (er... underpant powers).

Disney - the Incredibles (strength, stretch, speed, invisibility, weird), Mary Poppins (weird)

Anyone from Star Wars with funky Force fu.

That any help?

The Flash Queen refers to was Flash Gordon, the classic 1930s space hero reimagined in a campy film in 1980 that had Max Von Sydow as Ming the Merciless and Topol (Tevye in the Fiddler on the Roof film) as the film's resident good guy scientist. The entire score is by Queen.

Happy coincidence- I'm at work, and have a ton of this stuff bookmarked.

The Marvel Universe website, with everyone and their powers listed under heroes, villains, and teams.

This one is not official, but still handy with an A-Z listing. Who's Who in the DC Universe.

I'd also suggest checking out the Wildstorm properties owned by DC like America's Best Comics, Astro City, Planetary and The Authority.

A listing of the more notable series from Image Comics. Have a look at Invincible and Madman especially.

That should keep you up to your armpits in superheroes. but there are ton more obscure ones as well. I'll come back when I'm at my own computer and give you some theme music.

Oh! Depending on how strict you're being in defining 'superhero' how about stuff like Sailor Moon, too?

[identity profile] kali921.livejournal.com 2008-05-23 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
How about some Wildstorm people with some unusual power sets?

Jenny Sparks - The literal living avatar and actual Zeitgeist of the 20th century! The power to become a thousand-foot-tall font of electrical terror! Controls electricity, able to become incorporeal, can travel anywhere electricity can! The power of unparalleled sarcasm!

Jack Hawksmoor, God of Cities - the power to "talk" to cities! Super strength, speed, and agility! Precognition, psychometry, and the ability to animate architecture!

Midnighter - The power of black leather!

Ladytron - The punk rock bulletproof super cyborg!

Since no one's mentioned them yet:

Dr. Strange, Sorcerer Supreme - Sorcerer Supreme of Earth, master of the mystic arts, super pimp. Empowered by the Vishanti to manipulate all magic, tap into the universal energies, manipulation of extra-dimensional energies, telepathy, mind projection, astral projection.

Jean Grey as the Phoenix - Energy projection, telekinesis so powerful that she can disassemble you atom by atom, telepathy, manipulation of the universal life force itself, able to restore deceased beings from life, alchemy, teleportation, charged with being the Guardian of Creation.

God, no one's mentioned villains?

V, from V for Vendetta! L33t ninja skillz, snazzy fashion sense, and he plays a mean piano.

If I knew more about Watchmen, I would tell you about those heroes, but as is I can only recommend that you check them out.

I just want to say, I thought you'd made the Flaming Carrot up. But I was so wrong. And that amuses me to no end.
