From Veronica:

What do you think of the ships fandom tends to come up with that involve your character?

Mal: Uh, in the circles I always tried to travel with, I never encountered much outside of Mal/Inara. Or Mal/Serenity. Mal/about anyone else (Yes, I've seen /Book, too) happens on occasion, but I manage to successfully avoid them.

Sallie: Doesn't really exist in fandom anywhere.

Ned: Canon ship, yo. Though Ned/Olive is an amusing thought, sometimes.

SARAH: Uh. You tell me.

... I have no idea who fandom ships Zoe with. Eureka doesn't have a huge online fandom.

As for Robin, Robin/Barney is the most popular ship I've run across (BROTP FTW!). Though Robin/Ted was also pretty popular. I'd guess there's a Robin/Lily femmeslash contingent somewhere, though I've never seen it. The only one that wouldn't make any sense to me AT ALL would be Robin/Marshall.

VIMES/VETINARI NO NO NO DEAR GOD NO.

...

At the very least it'd have to be a threesome. With Ankh-Morpork. And maybe Sybil.

My others... I haven't really seen much fanfic, with the obvious exception of Jack. And really, not much is beyond him, except when he's written OOC. All lovey-dovey and undying devotion and never flirting again... no. But I can see the occasional span of monogamy, so... *Shrugs*

I'd be weirded out if Sabriel was shipped with anyone except Touchstone, mind you. I mean, who else is there? Mogget? Kerrigor? Yeesh. No. Except I may now have to look out of morbid curiosity.

Nico... all of her possible ones work. Nico/Chase makes me cry, though. Noooo! She's a fuckup when it comes to boys. And girls, considering how often she puts her foot in it with Karolina. None of them really would squick me, though. Just make me facepalm.

And Harth's canon ship is more disturbing than anything fandom could come up with. So.

AJ...when fandom deigns to notice her, she's normally the canon!ship of AJ/Sands (which is OTPFUCKEDUP). Although once I saw an AJ/Carolina that was so very, very hot.

Marlowe: Taking history as the broader fandom here...I have no objection to Marlowe/Shakespeare. None. At all. And Marlowe/Thomas Kyd I've made vague millicanon. So. *sunny smile*

Corrie and John Aversin have no fandom, Dara...I have no idea what fandom does with her.

Medusa...well, aside from the alternate!canon/fanon (mythology, I maintain, is a blurred line between the two) ship of her and Poseidon (which for all kinds of reasons, NO), Medusa/Athena has always intrigued me. Admittedly, I've only seen one fic of it heavily hinted, buuuuuuuuuuuut.

And Kore-Persephone...She's with Hades. Sorry, everyone else. Adonis I'm admittedly still working the kinks out (I'm fairly certain in my version she adored him more as a son than anything else, given he was a baby when handed over), but I did see once Persephone/Aphrodite.

That was...interesting.

(To sum up - my characters are boring in their fandoms)

Of course, if you want to talk HYPOTHETICAL CHARACTERS...

If I had Balian from Kingdom of Heaven in Bar, which I'm toying with, I'd be commenting with "OH GOD FANDOM NO. NO. NO WITH THE FATHER!SLASHING WITH GODFREY. NO.

AND PLEASE GOD IN HEAVEN DON'T SLASH BALIAN WITH BALDWIN THE LEPER KING PLEASE NO"

But, alas, I don't have him in Bar, so this comment is purely hypothetical.

[identity profile] timjr.livejournal.com 2008-08-27 12:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't ship Barney with anyone, and season 4 of HIMYM has a hard sell with me of making Barney a man truly in love. But there's a ton of Barney/Robin shippers out there. I live with one.

Cassie mainly has Cassie/Iron Lad and Cassie/Vision ships, both of which I find hilarious, and can't treat totally serious.

Anyone Hurley loves dies horribly.

Jack gets slashed with Nathan a lot, but I just go 'hee' and leave the hardcore guy slash alone. Jack/Allison is something that I find adorable and is sorta canon.

Eric O'Grady has no ships, really. Because he has, like, no fandom at all.

Hercules? Ummm? He sleeps with everything with boobs.

Illyria: a lot of the fandom (and whoever's drawing the covers for the comics (http://community.livejournal.com/filthyharlot/42763.html)) ships her with Spike. For whatever reason I find this completely repellant, but LOL SHIPPING HER WITH WESLEY IS A-OK DESPITE HER BEING Y'KNOW WALKING AROUND IN THE BODY OF HIS DEAD GIRLFRIEND.

Rose: ... I'm not touching DW fandom with a ten thousand foot pole. Um. Most popular tends to be Ten/Rose, which I'm not really that into. Nine/Rose would've been okay. And human!Ten/Rose is canon, and idk what to think of it yet.

Wanderer: Canon is Wanda/Ian. I tend to see fandom doing the same, because there's no good reason not to besides it being not really very interesting.

Bella: LOL TWILIGHT FANDOM. I won't touch it with a ten BILLION foot pole.

... aaaand that's all of mine that I actually play at the moment. >.>

I don't know anything about Dog Soldiers fandom taking an interest in Wells beyond one particular story that involved three-day werewolf mpreg with a threat of the manliest damn c-section ever. (Don't highlight that if you want your brain in one piece.) Annie doesn't exist in fandom.

I avoid Ghostbusters fic with ships in. Most of it is cartoon-based rather than movie or comic, and it almost inevitably pairs Winston and Ray, which I don't really see happening at all.

No clue about Sneakers fandom. Or Belgariad fandom, but Belar doesn't really strike me as being likely to get shipped there. He's one of the gods. People like shipping the humans better.

From what I understand Gordon tends to get shipped with Alyx, which is just fine with me, because you couldn't pay me to go looking for Half-Life fic. I know at least one person who insists Gordon and Barney Calhoun were getting it on in Black Mesa, that's as close as I get to fandom-spotted ships.

As for the mechs... *sigh* The phrase 'Bumblebee/Sam/Mikaela OT3!!' comes up an awful lot in summaries that I look at before moving on very, very quickly. I don't know about movie!Ironhide getting any shippy time, but G1 fans tend to either concentrate on Chromia or throw him at Optimus. Not really seeing that, myself, but you know how people get.

Also, anything involving timetravel from the past is RIGHT OUT. Got that, Joss?

Karolina:
Except that Nico/Karolina is terribly OOC for Nico (not K), it's not so bad.

Dinah:
OK, I have to admit, I like most of this. Mostly because any ship you can name (especially the popular ones) is SO FREAKING CANON. Batman/Dinah weirded me out when I first heard of it, but that was before I read the Bronze Age, when he had the cutest crush EVA. Now I have to admit I kinda ship it too, in a triple-woth-Ollie way. Her most common ship is Babs/Dinah and damn but that's the most canon non-canon ship since Bruce/Clark.

Will:
Anything that's not Elizabeth is just not on. Just no. Jack's practically a father figure, FFS.

Claire:
Man, I don't like her canon ships. Major fandom ship: incest, again. Not on, dudes.

Death:

Dark Angel, Alec gets shipped with everybody. I will freely cop to liking the occasional Max/Alec. Uh, there's also Alec/Ames White, which... what. I don't even want to get into the fic. (There is, in fact, one mpreg fic out there that... I can't even look it in the eye.)

For Studio 60, there's some pretty good Matt/Danny, though I'm a gen person pretty much across the board for fic. Still, yay screwy codependent friendships! Also, good Matt/Harriet is amazing. Amaaaazing! In The West Wing, Josh Lyman... does not get paired with as many people as, say, Sam Seaborne, but it's close. As a canon 'ship, I actually adore Josh/Amy Gardner. With Donna, once it's not UST anymore, what's the point?

Lady M/Macbeth is my OTP for always. I think Macbeth is one of Shakespeare's most romantic plays.

Um.

Crowley/Aziraphale = obviousness of great obviosity. Wegian.

On the other hand:

Crowley/Pollution.

WHAT.

Also the occasional Crowley/grown-up!Adam or Crowley/Adam/Aziraphale. These, I really don't ship, but I can at least... sort of see the rationale behind them (though more the latter than the former), and will allow myself to temporarily suspend disbelief for a well-written fic. As opposed to Crowley/Pollution. Which, again, just for the record:

WHAT.

It doesn't help that Pollution is fanonically a fucking bishounen. Flimsiest excuse for pretty mansex ever, fandom. Fail.

I am happily ignorant of most of what might be out there. I have no idea if any ships Gibbs with anyone. I assume that no one ships Knox or Dean O'Dell with anyone since I suspect I am their fan base.

I would guess that there are a good number of Charlie/Huntress fics following up on the 2000 Huntress miniseries and a few people who are convinced that Charlie and Renee Montoya should have gotten together (ignoring that Renee is a lesbian). Canonically, though, Charlie's true love was and is and will always Myra Fermin. I would hope that if there is Question fic, it involves finding a way to get them together again (even though I know it would never work).

And then there's Kirk. I am sure he's been paired off with every character on his show, on the other shows, and in the Star Trek universe. But I haven't read any of them. FWIW, I think the OTP is Kirk/Carol Marcus. (So do at least some of the people who made the films, since scenes involving the two of them getting back together were included in various drafts of the screenplay and even filmed but left in the cutting room.)

Revan: I've not come across any ships that I'm really opposed to in the KOTOR canon for Revan? Or none that I can think of that moment. I tend to like canon ones , such as Bastila/Revan, Exile/Atton, and the not-so canon ones, like Carth/Bastila, Revan/Carth, Revan/Malak. I don't really read much fanfiction for KOTOR anymore though.

Scorpius: He's from Harry Potter canon. I think that's all I really have to say with this one. But I do like some of the ships that have emerged, like Albus/Scorpius, whose ship's name (The AS/S Ship, sailed by the AS/S Pirates) just makes me giggle because I'm immature, and Scorpius/Rose.

Artemis: It's always been a small fandom, but forums seemed to have exploded recently because (spoiler warning) is considered canon now and that has always been a controversial ship. So there are some that are happy and others not so much. Me, I'm happy how it went in the book. Other than that, I've seen mostly Artemis/OCs, Artemis/Butler, (to protect spoiler, lol) and the odd Foaly/Opal, but I don't really follow fanfiction for Artemis.

Despite Elle's... being Elle, it's really hard for me to imagine her in a romantic relationship ... at all. At this rate there are very few characters I haven't seen Elle paired with, and even those sort of hinted at in canon (or really, Elle flirts with the character in canon, which doesn't exactly hint at anything at all to me) don't really appeal to me. I don't see how ships like Elle/Mohinder or Elle/Adam Monroe would ever work, their personalities are waaaay too different and Elle's not going to mentally grow up and not be crazy overnight, and Elle/Peter still pretty much leaves me with the mental image of an endless game of 'why are you hitting yourself?'

And of those that have not at all been hinted at in canon, Elle/HRG is... icky, I'm sure Elle/Sylar would work out really well except for the minor problem that THEY'D BE TRYING TO KILL EACH OTHER, and Elle/Claire... I could see if some big change happened to both of them, but it generally seems... unnecessary (yes, like most of fandom shipping).

... and I feel like the next most common Elle-pairing I've seen is Elle/Angela. I REALLY DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY.

While I don't read BSG fanfiction that much, I'm also fairly sure that while there may not be Caprica-Six/everyone, there's certainly a Six/everyone. Which... yeah, probably.
Edited 2008-08-27 14:13 (UTC)

[identity profile] tinylegacies.livejournal.com 2008-08-27 02:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I could see Elle/Mohinder working in the wake of the S2 finale if he decided to take her under his wing and help her turn her life around and there could be an Elle & Matt bitchfight....

I do ship Elle/Peter for much the same reasons.

And I can kind of see Elle/Sylar working in that horrible bad wrong way.

But Elle/Angela? WTF? And I can't ship Elle/Claire cause I read somewhere that initially Elle's mother was going to be Meredith, which would make them half-sisters.

Ummm, there is almost 0 fic in the YA fandom. So not much to worry about, since the YA slash is canon anyway.

Billy/Teddy = good, lovely, all that is wonderful in this world. Except when people make them preggers or write Billy as a crying uke boy. Ick.

Billy/Tommy = why god why why why why why aaaaaah. brainbleachplz.

Billy/Teddy/Tommmy = oddly enough, does not bother me, except I feel bad for Tommy because he's sort of the third wheel.

Billy/Female = I have never seen it, but if it happens I will kill something. With my hands.

AH HA HA HA HA HA...OH HAI TORCHWOOD FANDOM.

But seriously. There's tons of 1941!Jack/Our!Jack fic, including at least one community dedicated to them, as 1941!Jack's main function in the episode was to fall for Our!Jack, and for Our!Jack to fall for him. However, the issue I have with Jack/Jack fic is that the episode is so perfect and so self-contained that it's hard for me to see how it can be expanded on.

I will admit to having a soft spot for the AUs that have the Doctor rescuing 1941!Jack and having him as a companion, though. (And . . . I may have committed 1941!Jack/Ianto fic. *cough* It feels incestuous now.)

As for Ianto, yeah, he gets shipped with everyone and then some, and honestly? If you're a good enough writer you can convince me of anything for the length of the story. My favorite is Jack/Ianto, of course, though I love a good Ianto/Tosh or Ianto/Doctor. He doesn't get paired with people outside of the TW/DW universe as much as Jack does, except for SG:A sometimes. I love a good Ianto/McKay or Ianto/Lorne, of course (my OTP in othergame.)

Several of mine really don't have huge fandoms, like Dennis and Plourr, where I am basically the only person on the internet writing fan fiction about either of them. I've seen one fic ever about each of them; the Plourr one paired her with commando Kapp Dendo, which is (to the extent that he has a giant crush on her) canon, and the Dennis one put him with his best friend Gordon, which -- NO. NO NO. NO NO NO NO NO. GOD NO. There is also no fandom for The Red Star; as far as I know, no one's ever written Maya fanfiction besides Ana and me.

Tycho mostly gets paired with Winter, who he marries canonically, so good show, fandom; the second-most common is probably Tycho/Wedge, which -- okay, I can possibly see, under certain circumstances and if it doesn't mess with either of their marriages. In general, I don't read a lot of slashfic involving Tycho, because for whatever reason (because he's the prettiest?) he gets written as a crazy sex-loving slut, and I can't even begin to describe my reaction to that. Iella has basically no fic, and in the stuff where she's featured, she is paired with Wedge, which! Canon!

There isn't actually a lot of fandomy stuff involving Liz; she's pretty hated, in some circles. I made the mistake of trolling fanfiction.net for Hellboy fic, once, and discovered that Hellboy is paired more often with Mary Sues than with her. *wry* But that's the main fandom pairing! There's also some Liz/Abe, but that's from the comics and the animated movies.

Riley gets paired with Mary Sues. Constantly. Forever and ever. And I'm not gonna lie -- I have a giant soft spot for Tony/Rhodey, which is far and away fandom's most popular 'ship for Rhodey.

There's a lot of Hawkeye/Trapper, Hawkeye/BJ, and Hawkeye/Father Mulcahy out there. Fandom likes to forget that all Hawkeye does for 11 seasons is chase skirts. I can't stand BJ, so I can't get behind that pairing (plus, Peg. Erin. he's not gonna go casually sleeping with Hawkeye, fandom; both of them are better guys than that), and Hawkeye/Mulcahy fills me with deeply uncomfortable feelings. I know that part of the draw is that Mulcahy's celibate and Hawkeye is pulling him down into a world of sin blah blah blah but UCK SF[A'SLFDSG NO. I don't mind Hawkeye/Trapper, though, and neither does Trapper-mun. We are mutually non-squicked!

(I have a sinking suspicion that there's Hawkeye/Frank out there, too, but I am not looking for it.)

[identity profile] 52-dropoff.livejournal.com 2008-08-27 03:27 pm (UTC)(link)
We all know, of course, that the only ship for Hawkeye is Hawkeye/Margaret. Which is probably really predictable and boring.

I have a friend whose fannish handle (and con badge) is MASHFanficGirl. When I met her, the first thing I said to her was "so...do Hawkeye and Margaret get together?" (Yes, in her fics, they do.)

For Ace, the weirdest one I've stumbled across was Ace/Mel, which trumps even Ace/Doctor. Because even though they got on mostly alright in the one episode they were together, they only did so because bickering would have gotten them killed. Every time they were left alone they got snippy. Just. What?

Of course, in that fic Mel became an uberpirate under Glitz's mentorship and came back very unMel. So.

Other than that, Ace fails at relationships, canonically. She really and truly does. And usually in spectacular fashion, since those she tends to crush on later try to kill her.

Also, Steph? I really really really really do not want to think about Mal/Serenity. EVER. Ta.

I haven't read ReBoot fanfic in ages, but back in the day there were a disturbing number of fics pairing Bob with Hexadecimal. Usually involving Hex raping Bob and then bearing his child.

Dean gets shipped with, let me see. Sam, John, Ellen, Jo, Bela, Ruby, the Impala, the Crossroads demon, Henricksen, and sometimes Gordon. I think out of all of those the one that terrifies me the most is Dean/John Winchester. I just. I can't even.

*hands*

So gross.

As for the rest of mine--I accidentally ran across a scary half-naked X-23 pic that was implying she and Logan were shacking up. I think I cried. Usually it's Julian Keller, though.

And there was this one really terrifying Peter/Aslan fic in Narnia-dom. Um. That burned my eyes.

The rest of my fandoms are too obscure--or the characters I play are--and so there isn't a lot of fic. Or I just don't go looking for any fandom. Hi WoT!

[identity profile] bodldops.livejournal.com 2008-08-27 03:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Why do people keep getting shipped with their machines? I mean. Seriously. That can't be comfortable.

There's not a hell of a lot of Y: The Last Man fic out there, but I've only ever seen Beth 2 paired up with Hero or Yorick. Usually Hero, and even though I tend to think of them just having a strong friendship, I have to admit this is one of those times when I'm not wondering what the fuck fandom is smoking.

Anybody who wanted to woo Faye Valentine would have a hell of a bumpy road ahead of them. But she usually gets paired with Spike. And I won't say I think that's totally impossible in any scenario, but to make a long story short, what keeps them apart and keeps it more of a one-sided love/hate thing on Faye's part than anything else are things that are the very essences of Faye and Spike and can't well be ignored. Other than that, Faye's most often paired with Jet. I know there's a little Faye/Julia fic out there, and I've seen a few Faye/Gren. Sometimes it's hard to blame people for wanting to pair certain Bebop characters up because the canon interaction between all of them is so fantastic.

Tifa is most often paired with the canon object of her affection, Cloud. I've discovered that Tifa/Reno is a popular pairing, and I'm kind of shocked by just how popular it seems to be. Tifa/Vincent apparently has pretty passionate following, too. I've also heard of some Tifa/Rude (he does canonically have a crush on her in the original game) and read a couple of interesting Tifa/Aerith fics.

Kate Austen... well, besides the inevitable canon matches of Jack and Sawyer, I've also seen fandom write Kate/Sayid, which I find a little intriguing, and Kate/Sun. I know there's a Kate/Claire following out there. And a Kate/Juliet one, although I've only ever seen idle fantasizing about that and not actual fic.

Aaaand the character I've got waiting for some airtime seems like she's been paired up by fandom with almost every male she knows. Usually with her partner, though, and the knight probably comes in second.

Final Fantasy VII was my first fandom back in the day; Tifa/Reno was totally one of the most popular pairings. It always bewildered me, to some extent, because, well. He dropped the Plate. Sector 7! He's kind of an ass! Cloud!

But I was totally a Tifa/Rude shipper when I was 12. >_>

genarti: Knees-down view of woman on tiptoe next to bookshelves (o rly (River))

One word: Tamcest.

*pained face*

The other common one that hurts my head is River/Jayne. Yeah, they get on great that way! (I also see a fair bit of River/Kaylee, which at least doesn't involve incest or people who strongly dislike each other.) River gets shipped with almost everybody on Serenity, though, and I cordially avoid all of it.

I haven't delved much into WoT fandom, and I don't know how much Lan-fic there is in any case. I'm told that Lan/Moiraine does exist, though. Which is predictable, I suppose, but it also makes me make faces since canon explicitly says that that never happened and neither of them are interested in each other.

Piotr: again, I haven't gone looking too much. I don't know of any ships that pain my soul, though they probably exist. Kitty/Piotr seems to be the main OTP, though he does date other people in canon and thus presumably in other fics around. I don't know what slash pairings are big in fandom with him; I don't think he's one of the main focuses for that. Uh. Ultimateverse he's gay? So there's AU-canonical slash there, although I don't follow Ultimates enough to remember who's involved.

(Retired: Edmund: one word: Pevensiecest. MOVING ON.)

Honey: ...I haven't run across any, but I suspect there's not tons that isn't Honey/Mori. I'm not sure I'm allowed to have my soul pained too much by any Ouran-fandom stuff, though, given what canon throws at us to start with.

She-Hulk/Mystique, with Mystique shapeshifted to possess an appendage worthy of a frost giant. Ewwwwwww.

She-Hulk/Sue Storm. Ewwwww.

She-Hulk/Sue Storm/Johnny Storm. EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW.

She-Hulk/Wyatt Wingfoot - I'm totally good with this, because it was so much fun when Wyatt and Shulkie were dating.

She-Hulk/Spider-Man, which doesn't work in my mind because Peter is in love with his feisty and very lovely wife.

She-Hulk/Thor, which I think people like because both characters are, ah, unabashedly lusty. This one's fun and I suspect would include spanking at some point.

She-Hulk/Hercules - well, that was canon in the past, and briefly canon in the very near past, and may be canon in the future, because I have a feeling that PAD isn't done with it yet.

She-Hulk/Hulk - NO. No, no, no, and no, and I will start kicking teeth in if you try to make an argument for that ship.

She-Hulk/Big Barda - cute, but totally not my thing. When I am exposed to fic of this ship, it usually involves fetishizing naked women wrestling, so...

She-Hulk/Aaron Stack - no, I'm NOT kidding.

Hawkgirl/Wonder Woman - I see absolutely nothing beyond platonic chemistry between these two. There's both Kendra and Diana, and Shayera Hol (JLU Hawkgirl) and Diana, and I don't see either ship, really.

Hawkgirl/Black Canary - No. Dinah canonically is more of a nurturing figure for Kendra, not a romantic interest. Besides, it doesn't logically make sense, once Geoff Johns started writing the Hawkman book, for Kendra to really be interested in anyone else other than Carter. It was a long time coming, but once it happened, that was it.

Hawkgirl/Red Arrow - No.

Hawkgirl/Green Arrow - Jesus GOD, no. I LOVE Ollie to itty bitty pieces, but no, no, no. This one gets written solely because I think people want to see Carter go ballistic on Ollie.

Angel's got one of the strongest canon OTPs I've ever seen. I also think Angel/Mark could be really strong, in the right circumstances. If fandom gets up to much of anything else, I don't know and I don't think I want to.

If anyone's writing Enchanted Forest Chronicles fic, odds are they're going to stick with the canon pairings, which... maybe it's just that I first read the books when I was ten, but Morwen/Telemain never felt right in the books. It didn't actually click until I had a few threads here, and now? It makes perfect sense, including why it would take so long for anything to happen.

Sneakers pretty much has no fandom, that I'm aware of, which is good news for my brain. I don't think I'd be able to handle whatever they came up with. (Ditto Funny Thing Happened.)

I don't follow Night at the Museum fandom, such as it is, but I think people are more interested in the characters that aren't Larry. That said, I don't mind the canon hints of Larry/Rebecca, but I think they'd have quite a trial getting the chances to talk that'd build the relationship.

Villains By Necessity also doesn't really have a fandom. If anyone's written for it, I doubt they paid much attention to Cata; she's got about a paragraph of canon in a 500+-page book.

In fanfic Jack is basically the CTU bicycle, as he's been paired up with pretty much everyone. I think if there's a ship I hate it's less because there's something very wrong about the ship (though I really can't see Jack/Ramon. Especially after "Only the faithful get my cock! Traitors get pain and death!") than because the fandom perverts canon completely to get their ship together.

Yes I'm looking at you, Chlackers. You took what I could have enjoyed as a not-gonna-happen-but-fun ship and totally turned me off it.

As an example of how bad it gets? I read a fic where Jack Bauer was hiding under Chloe's desk and begging her to protect him from big bad Audrey Raines. An Audrey who'd been turned into a whining, selfish, bitchy shrew of a woman.

And then there's "The Constant" which seriously, don't even get me started on as GAH SO MUCH WTF AND RAGE.
