The Question: A miniseries from about five years ago that totally ignored how he is usually portrayed, and that gave him some sort of shamanic "talk to cities" power. The art was great, but the story was not, and it was promptly forgotten when he returned in 52.

Kirk: I'm of the opinion that any time he's written as a shoot first, ask questions later cowboy, he's out of character. But it's more accurate to say that Gene Roddenberry and co-producer Gene Coon had opposite visions of Kirk, and thus I can't say that the space cowboy is incorrect.

Gibbs and Knox don't have enough canon to be portrayed wrong. And just because I can vent, the way Barry Allen has been written so far in his return, he is very close to being out of character, far too grim and mopey and with a really annoying retcon. I am ready to say that the guy in the new comics is as much a reboot as Chris Pine's Kirk, but at least the latter is called that.

........

Elle - I'll just sum it up as "when she became Sylar's blow up doll." The end.

But I guess nothing really leaps to mind for Caprica-Six and Carla. I can think of things I disagreed with in BSG, but nothing that particularly pertains to Caprica. I think the writers loved her more than I do by the end. There was one event in s4 that I felt... probably wasn't handled in a way that it could have been, but not in such a way that it was out of character or anything like that.

Annabelle doesn't have a lot of canon back-story, but her whole unrequited feelings for Michael, betrayal and death are a side-note in Adventure's glossary. There's no foreshadowing, no explanation, nothing. Why does she fall in love with Michael? Why doesn't she just get over him already when it's clear he doesn't return her feelings? It feels as if someone felt the need to meet an angst quota and put that line in right before the book went to the printer. :-(

There's that time X-23 was an underage mute dominatrix prostitute in New York! Screw you, Quesada! (I ignore this for the purposes of millicanon, for serious.)

And that other time when she wore Talon's costume and ran around on rooftops narrating her own actions and being all feral. Screw you, Claremont! (The characterization is ignored, and I don't refer much to X's first time at the Institute -- it really doesn't seem to fit with later canon. So -- yeah.)

Oh. And that other time in League of Losers -- an AU -- where she cried and hid somewhere when the Mansion was invaded by warriors from the future. Oh her SHAME. *sigh*

But the underage mute dominatrix prostitute wins. Or loses.

Sariel hasn't got enough screentime to really be out of character -- what you see is what you get, literally. I've heard of something happening in a non-canon Trek novel that immediately struck me as quite out of character, but at least that's not canon? Erm. I'm just hoping *I* haven't gone out of character with her in Milliways, seeing as I've written more for her than TNG ever did--good God, that's terrifying to actually say! I'm trying, really I am.

Unrelated to much of anything, but I need to find a few more icons for this journal, both Milliways and otherwise. Um... anybody up to helping a girl out? I'd find/make them myself, but--well. Can't see screen, can't photoshop, yeah.

As for Gaeta...actually, there isn't too much that springs to mind. The only thing that makes me go "bwuh?" a bit is [whitetext just in case] when he slept with an Eight in the "Face of the Enemy" webisodes, but for me, that's more "...uh, you guys could've accomplished the same goal, and probably accomplished it better, without tossing sex in there" and less "OMGWTFOOC."

...though yeah, it also bugs me, a lot, that it kinda undermined how these were the episodes where Gaeta came out to the viewers.

Kaylee was oversexed, under-characterized, and thoroughly un-awesome in Serenity. I like to think we fixed that.

Also, there was a 180-degree turn in characterization for Bobby Singer between the next-to-last and last episodes of this season's Supernatural. >:(

LOL STAR WARS BOOKS.

Thankfully, Allston is pretty much the only person who ever wrote Wes. He's good people.

Although daaamn he totally underused Ben in LotF: Fury. In the previous book, Ben was all GRR LOOK AT MY OEDIPAL COMPLEX WHILE I TRY TO KILL JACEN SOLO and then he was suddenly okay in Fury, totes not with any trauma at all from being tortured by his cousin, etc, and relegated to the background (for the rest of the series, really, but kudos to Karen Traviss for actually giving him stuff to do in her last book).

But abrupt face turns in characterisation is always a problem when multiple authors are supposed to write a cohesive storyline. It's okay when individual authors write their own books or trilogies -- variation can be explained away by timelines, and usually isn't as noticeable anyway -- but whole series like the New Jedi Order and Legacy of the Force ... y'all are screwed, kids. It's actually Jacen Solo who suffers most from this, which is, y'know, a bit unfortunate given that he was the entire point of LotF. (I tend to like Denning's writing best for both characters, and most of the rest of the cast, too. Del Rey, just get him to write the whole of Fate of the Jedi and get Allston to write more X-wing books, 'kay?)

I just want to say...I love Ben's Oedipal complex. Is that weird? :P

[identity profile] candied-rabbit.livejournal.com 2009-05-28 03:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Towards the very end of canon, Momiji does a pretty dramatic turn where he suddenly stops being girly and starts pining after the main, female character.

The main, female character with whom all his interactions thus far have been friendly and maternal. At the same time that he's getting over his actual mother issues.

I don't like your vaguely Oedipal overtones or your insistence on making characters' gender non-conformity into something inevitably cured and normalized, Fruits Basket. :/ Especially when they all get shoved in at the very tail end of the series.

Well, there's Meg's living her entire adult life as a response to her sister's decisions, because it's incomprehensible that she ever got to a point where it wasn't All About Kim.

And then there's entire fourth season of Bones for Angela. Three seasons of character development gone in a poof of "Oooh, she's an artist who is flighty and sex-obsessed! That'll be fun!"

Watch me ignore both.

Sweet crimson Santa on a cracker, don't get me started on the fourth season incarnation of Brennan. I will be here all day and I have reports to get out. Three years of learning to 'get' people wiped out, and suddenly she's clueless about anything related to the cultural side of anthropology.

I had a very hard time believing that Parker would date Logan, even if Veronica gave her blessing. Not as a reflection on Logan, but dating a friend's recent ex is just.....weirdness. But we wound up really glossing over all of that.

[identity profile] spooky-lemur.livejournal.com 2009-05-28 03:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Now that LJ has finally fixed whatever was going on I can answer my own question!

The relationship between Ben Grimm and Alicia Masters is one of Marvel's cornerstone OTPs. What I really like about the relationship is how complex it is and how it has survived their spliting and becoming friends.

In the second volume of The Thing solo series, scribed by Dan Slott (awesome series btw) Ben and Alicia are still friends and not lovers. Dan decided to try and get the pair back together in the final issues of the series.

This is all well and good except for the method he had Ben use. He had Ben get Alicia's current boyfriend a job which sends him to the other side of the world! All so Ben can put the moves on Alicia while he is gone. Keep in mind this is someone she has been shown to be very happy with and someone Ben had shown begrudging respect for.

Complete and sleazy move and not something Ben would do. The Ben I know would be honest with Alicia or keep his mouth shut because she was happy.

I'll keep away from trying to reconcile Val's story from between two very different authors.

Um.

Doc Scurlock.

That is all.

(Though, to be completely honest, it's ooc I indulge to its fullest, because when they're happy they're just so damn adorable together. But, nonetheless, it does get kind of hard writing a vengeful, brokenhearted man-killer with a personal vendetta, when there's one man she just can't seem to quit. I'm working on the Millicanon to put the pieces together, honest.)

I disagree with the canon line that Angel's favorite holiday is Halloween. Especially since he's had time to hang around after, you know, dying about that time. He's a lot more of a Christmas person. (One of my Millicanon bits is that Angel died the day Daylight Savings Time ended, For Great Symbolism.)

When I first read the Enchanted Forest books, I thought Morwen suddenly going 'OH BY THE WAY I'M MARRYING TELEMAIN' at the end of the last book was completely out of nowhere. I still kind of do, but - granted, she's not the POV character in that one, and it's been 17 years since she was the POV character. Threads between her and Telemain here actually helped me see the OTP-ness; she just knows him well enough to know that if she moves very quickly, he'll bolt, and then who'll make sure he eats and sleeps regularly? XD

Carl pretty much falls asleep on the job mid-film, when the guys are trying to track down Cosmo's office; he really should know that 'private property' is pretty much the opposite of nothing, in those circumstances. My Millicanon is that he pretty much was asleep, since the night before wasn't terribly restful and adrenaline only gets one so far.

Nothing particularly springs to mind for Larry or Cosmo (caveat on Larry being... that there might be something, once I can see Part 2. But I can't comment as of yet).

Cata's canon consists of Sam more or less pining over her, and having a dream about her. Hard to note anything from that.

Moist, I remain convinced, has untapped depths of badass - but part of the problem is that he can't see them himself. (But Coreen went some way toward pointing him in the right direction, last night, so. Possibly Cubefall will help him see it.)

[identity profile] coreenfennel.livejournal.com 2009-05-28 05:09 pm (UTC)(link)

Oh, man. Kate Warner gets smacked around by the majority of the 24 fandom (almost as hard as Kim Bauer!), but I swear, the deleted scenes with Kate from season two? ARE ALL KATE BEING EXTRA-AWESOME.

Which I totally integrated when I wrote her canon!OOMs last summer. Because it is canon. Just, y'know, deleted!canon.

She keeps the coolest head possible under extreme duress, tries to build a rapport with her captor/torturer and cites the Five Pillars of Islam; she explains some of her sister's history to Jack and reveals Marie's actual motivation for being a terrorista; she and Kim even bond a little bit on the way to the hospital.

And as far as Ben goes? I ... actually have no gripes! I'm biased as hell, but I adored 3:10 to Yuma from start to finish, characterizations included.

Coreen's...man, it's how I brought her to Bar, but getting possessed by the badass demon that was supposed to turn her into some dude's demonic bride-queen was pretty horrible. And by pretty horrible...I do not mean totally sweet. (Show reference)

Yeeeah. She basically became a back door to get to her boss, the main character. WTF. Seriously, on an epic level. It's almost lucky for Coreen that the show ends there; she's nearly been killed at least a half a dozen times.
