Edda James' At Last Frank Sinatra's All of Me Siouxsie and the Banshees' Last Beat of My Heart Big Bad Voodoo Daddy I wanna be like you (Cause it's fun!) Save Ferris' cover of Come On Eileen (Again cause it's fun and every wedding needs some Ska.)
Background music most of the time? And I like...or at least I'm aiming for just upbeat stuff, with only two or three moments of mushy-slow song time. (Alec and I aren't really dancers.)
My problem is going to be when it comes time to pick what music to walk down the aisle to.
Edda James' At Last Seconding this one. adding: The Luckiest by Ben Folds The Beatles' When I Saw Her Standing There (I have no idea if this is the real title, but it's a fun song to dance to!) Smoke Gets Gets in Your Eyes by The Platters (oldies are awesome!) Come Away With Me by Norah Jones
I've been to several wedding receptions as various cousins get married. I have been able to comprehend, and investigate later, all of two of the songs played thereat. Those two are At the Beginning, from Anastasia, and Out of My League, by Steven Speaks.
As it may be relevant to some answers, whom would you be marrying?
What A Wonderful World, Louis Armstrong for slow or Joey Ramone for fast Two of Us, the Beatles Accidentally in Love, the Counting Crows Feeling Good, Nina Simone Beloved One, Ben Harper
At other weddings I've been to that have had dancing, if you just play what's popular people tend to be pretty happy. I like gentle instrumentals and/or standards for, background music during meals, too.
I can put something together for you after I get home from work if you want.
If you want suggestions for walk to walk down the aisle to, my sister used "At Last."
It's Counting Crows, not The Counting Crows. The crows are being counted, not doing the counting. (It's a reference to those rhymes about telling your fortune by counting how many magpies you see, but different corvidae.)
"I'm a Believer," the one by Smashmouth. Because it's impossible not to jump around like a gleeful idiot when you hear it, and isn't that what weddings are all about? :D
Thirding Etta James' version of "At Last". Patty Griffin's "Heavenly Day" April Wine's "Here For a Good Time" Beach Boys' "God Only Knows" Oh and of course, "Love Shack" because it's kitchy wonderfulness.
And not what was asked for but for music for the actual *wedding*, I will love my brother forever for using the "Raiders March" from Indiana Jones as the recessional.
This question is strange to me. Do people usually pick the music for other folks' wedding receptions? I mean in this particular case we do in fact all kind of know you, Steph, and you are actually getting married soon, but as a general question of the day… yeah, anyway.
My mix would probably include some stuff like: We End Up Together – The New Pornographers Mountains – Biffy Clyro Pursuit of Happiness – Kid Cudi and I dunno, maybe Barbara Streisand – Duck Sauce, because how can you not dance to this:
I don't know about your wedding reception, but this is definitely getting played at mine. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Y8-CBXfzhE) Mostly as a tribute to my father because he loved the Dolls.
(Watch out for David Johansen's mouth in that video - IT WILL EAT YOU, along with the hot pink drum kit and Arthur's thigh-high sky blue patent leather boots.)
Dunno about your feelings on classic rock but I've already declared in the extremely unlikely event that I got married, the song Sunshine of Your Love by Cream will be featured.
Well, "featured" is putting it mildly. I clearly expressed a desire to walk down the aisle to this tune.
I kind of loled to death when they played "Runaround Sue" at my wedding. It didn't seem terribly appropriate but it still made me giggle a lot. If your guests have senses of humor.
Our playlist was REALLY eclectic, though. We asked for a good mix of 80s and 90s, some oldies for my parents, some classic rock for my husband's parents, and general party type songs for the kids and people who just wanted to be goofballs.
Weirdly? I've heard it played at at least one other wedding. Totally different DJs, or I'd say it was just that one DJ's sense of humor.
I still giggle at it, though. It's pretty funny. Better than my friend who kept getting hit with 70s disco crap that she hated and kept begging her friends to request good songs so they'd stop playing it.
My brother and his wife (of one year as of earlier this month!) chose a much better approach: they run in artistic circles and we are a musical family, so they just assigned all their friends and relatives songs and did it up concert-style. Check it out! I'm the one singing "Sledgehammer".
Now that LJ has decided to stop playing dead, maybe I can finally post the comment I wanted to more than 8 hours ago!
(OR, LJ WILL EAT MY COMMENT AND YOUTUBE WILL STOP WORKING NEXT. WTF, INTERNETS?)
Third time's a charm: Dreams (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yam5uK6e-bQ) by The Cranberries, because god help you if you set up a microphone for speeches; you will get karaoke (true story. I've been to at least three weddings where this song has started some of the most hilarious sing-alongs I've ever witnessed in my life. Good times).
Don't Stop Believing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rfUYuIVbFg0) by Journey, for the same reasons as above.
Marry You (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xDZ_YI8I9Y) by Bruno Mars, just because it's a fun song. Also, because they sang it on Glee (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nE56IYzZTX4). :D?
Baby Got Back (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k4he79krseU) by Sir Mixalot, because it was on your list to play anyway. Amirite?
Finally, and possibly most importantly, this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lf4__-xWq8w). >_>
I know what you're thinking, and I'd love to be the DJ at your wedding, thanks. ;)
