He leans in a little closer and murmurs; "One way to find out..." following it with an awkward chuckle.

"Guess you learn something new every day."

She gives him her best cocked eyebrow. "If this involves pinching, I don't want to know." But she laughs despite herself, and her uncertainty.

"So, alternate dimension? Mind control? Aliens?"

The eyebrow only makes him look away a brief moment, considering the other options.

"Yeah... not really sure." He takes another bite, glancing around.

"Maybe we should take a walk? Check it out?"

Even Henry can't handle her eyebrow of doom. At least she still has that going for her.

"Are you suggesting a bit of investigation, Detective?"

Even he knows when it's best to back down. And clearly, she knows how to appeal to his sensibilities.

"Well... it might be a good idea." He shrugs, shifting the shoulders of his suit jacket. "Unless you're fine with coffee and donuts somewhere that may or may not be a shared hallucination."

"Of course, if this is a dream or hallucination or something, an investigation won't do much good," she reasons, though she's not sure if she's trying to talk herself out of it, or what she's doing.

"But doing nothing isn't my style. Or yours. At the very least we can look around."

"Sounds like a plan."

Ever the gentleman, he considers offering his elbow, but knows it's likely to earn him a stern look and possibly an eyebrow. Instead, he champions his coffee and glances around.

Looks like a pretty typical bar, old style for sure... before disco ruined the concept. The doors apparently heading outside aren't far behind them and there's quite a bit going on.

"Where should we start?"

"Well, maybe if we have a look outside, we might gain a few clues about where we are. If we figure out where we are, maybe we'll be able to work out how we got here."

It makes sense in her head, anyway.

It's as good a place to start as any, and the logic is sound.

He polishes off the last of his donut and then leads the way - pushing open the door to reveal mid-afternoon somewhere that was definitely not Southern California. There was no parking, and from what he could see no cars, only a path leading down toward what looks like a decent sized lake and into a dense wooded area.

Without humor he says; "We're not anywhere near home."

She steps out and turns in a circle, taking it all in. "No we're not. I'm not even sure we're..." She trails off.

There's an otherworldiness about this place. Gravity works, and she can breathe, but it's not like being in another country. She traveled through Europe during college, she's been to Australian, Japan and India. There's always a little sense of difference being on another continent, but this isn't quite like that.

But dare she say "I don't think we're on Earth" out loud?

She doesn't need to say it, he's already thinking it.

After an uneasy pause, he whispers; "Shared hallucination's looking like a pretty good option right now."

His eyes track across the expanse of the lake, catching movement beneath the surface.

"I really don't want to think about how that could be what's happening, Henry."

Of course, a hallucination would eventually end, which would mean that she'd eventually get home to Iris. Maybe even in time to put her to bed. And that's a point in favor of taking that tack.

"If we're just hallucinating, won't hurt to go back in and drop some whiskey in these coffees, right?" She's not sure why she even wants to, but it's as reasonable an idea as anything else she can think of.

And he wouldn't disagree.

Nodding, Henry turned back toward the doors that seemed somehow further away than what the had come, and led the way back up the path.

"I, uh... I think I could get behind that plan."

"Do you have a better one? I'm open to all suggestions."

"Let's..." he takes a deep sip off his coffee, brow wrinkled as he contemplates the situation. "Let's try to find our way back to the station."

"I," Karen hesitates, though she's not sure why, exactly. Henry's right. Why they're here, why this is happening isn't really important. They need to try to get home.

"I think that's the best thing."

The follow the path back toward the bar, and Henry's somewhat hesitant to go back inside.

But when they do, among the patrons is a door that looks suspiciously like the one he'd opened to get there in the first place.

"You see what I'm seeing?"

"Mysterious door, no apparent origin, seems to lead to nowhere?"

"Sounds about right." He nodded, taking one last long drink off his coffee.

"Well... shall we, then?"

"We don't really have an option. After you."

Steeling his nerves, he ditches to coffee cup and then somewhat hesitantly takes her hand - hey, if he's walking into a strange door leading to nowhere in the middle of a bar that doesn't exist, he's taking someone with him.

"Here goes..."

They push through, and she feels like she's taken ten steps, even though it was only two, and she stops, looking around.

Henry's hand is still clasped tight in her own. "Are we...?"

"Not dead..." he cuts in quickly, seeing the familiar stacks of evidence boxes and manilla folders. Without thinking, he squeezes her hand tightly, and then somewhat awkwardly lets go.

"We're in evidence."

They are, indeed, in the SBPD evidence room, and everything seems pretty normal. She sees the evidence clerk slipping out toward the ladies' room. Or maybe lunch.

"I wonder how much time has passed."

He checks his watch against the clock hanging above the desk... he's an hour ahead.

"That clock hasn't changed since we... left. But I'm showing just under an hour."
