Agh sorry so late!
"Thank ye," she says, because - in spite of how hard she's been fighting it lately - she is her mother's child. "That's what I'm trying to improve," she says, speaking in a heavy Scottish brogue. "I have to be at my best if I want to win."

It sounds fun already. "I happen to be moderately skilled in the bow and crossbow: a useful trade I acquired in my youth." Even if he's not that old, or actually old.
Can't have been that long ago.

"You have to be more than a little skilled to survive the highlands," she replies. "My da let me learn how to shoot when I was three years old."

...the man even manages to keep a straight face. Kudos?

But there's a snort of a laugh. "If you're willing to lend an ear, I'd be glad to teach you something." She doesn't condescend.

Usually he'd mean where are the less-protected valuables, but not this time.

"Shall I?"

Better to say, he does not sight the target along the arrow for any actual length of time, firing with economical motions. He hits halfway to center.
A decent shot.

But Merida - impetuous and permanently cocky - believes she can beat him. "I have a feeling you live by that thing," she declares, carefully notching her arrow. Her gaze locks upon the target and she releases the bowstring.
Her arrow lands a hair's breath from the bullseye.

His second shot lands an inch from hers.

String. Notch. Release.
She splits his arrow in half.

Quite so.
"I am a moderately resourceful man with a talent for making the best out of risky situations." Thief and likely a gambler too.
no subject
"A thief and a highwayman?" Her mother wouldn't approve of her shooting with such a man. This is possibly why she hasn't left.

"And I much prefer to work in cities. Roads are useful when you need to move from place to place, but it's a terrible hassle for all involved to perform a reasonable job in the wilds of Sanctuary." No no, too many dangers out there.

"...the tales must have some truth to them at least." He fires another arrow, hitting the target midway to center.
no subject
Merida plucks up an arrow from her quiver and spins it between her fingers, quiet, contemplatively.
