It doesn't necessarily have to mean that the pup stared off evil, just that they turn evil. Canon has definitely shown us what that would look like for Fluttershy.

I recognize that, but... I don't feel like I know enough of why Fluttershy is the way she is to have a real feel for the ways she could plausibly be different. And, I dunno, I feel like this is asking for something more extreme than petty cruelty.
