"Cheat history?" he asks curiously. "Why would I want to do that?"

[witchfinder_general]

"To help people?" Father Harman says.

[athelstanthescribe]

"God's will cannot be cheated", he says seriously. "To help someone recover from illness is one thing, and if they recover, it wasn't their time to die. But to change what He has already willed to be..."

[witchfinder_general]

"If you could find something here to help them recover?" Father Harman says.

[athelstanthescribe]

"...then, perhaps, my very presence here is also by His will", he realizes.

[witchfinder_general]

"It might be true," Father Harman concedes.

[athelstanthescribe]

"And anything I am permitted to take home, would also be so."

[witchfinder_general]

"I am sure," Father Harman says. "I am using it the same way for my own work."

[athelstanthescribe]

"What is your own work?" he asks curiously.

[witchfinder_general]

"I hunt blood-drinking monsters," Father Harman says. "Corpses reanimated by evil forces, known as vampires."

[athelstanthescribe]

The young man crosses himself reflexively.

[witchfinder_general]

"Precisely," Father Harman says.

[athelstanthescribe]

It doesn't even occur to him to doubt that vampires exist. "How did you come into that line of work?"

[witchfinder_general]

"They're often repulsed by anything holy, being unholy monsters," Father Harman says. "So being a priest helps against them."

[athelstanthescribe]

"Of course", he says with a nod. "You must have given up a great deal for such a cause."

[witchfinder_general]

"I'm a priest," Father Harman says. "I go where I'm assigned. I happened on the vampires, and as I knew about them anyway, was assigned to fight them."

[athelstanthescribe]

"Assigned?" He looks up. "Many know that they exist, then?"

[witchfinder_general]

"No, but some people in quiet places within the church hierarchy do," Father Harman says. "The church has been around almost two thousand years by my time. There is little they don't know."

[athelstanthescribe]

"It's believed, in my time", he says with a nod. "Many poor innocent souls have probably died on the suspicion... and perhaps just a few guilty souls with them."

[witchfinder_general]

Father Harman nods. "At least, we have ways of reliably telling them apart," he says.

[athelstanthescribe]

"What are those?" Athelstan asks, interested.

[witchfinder_general]

"They can't stand sunlight," Father Harman says, "but that might be a legitimate human illness. They don't show up in mirrors; that is the one thing which unmistakeably sets them apart."

[athelstanthescribe]

"Hm." He thinks about it. "Wouldn't they stay away from mirrors as much as possible?"

[witchfinder_general]

"That is why we need portable mirrors, or similar equipment."

[athelstanthescribe]

"Those are very expensive."

The closest he's ever held to a mirror is a polished piece of metal.
