"This place can be strange like that. People come from different places and different times." He shrugs. It's all magic, to complicated for him.

"So it would seem." He glances around, eyes full of interest. "Have you been long in this place?"

[intoaman]

He thinks, frowning. "Half a moon? Not very long. I haven't eaten so well. Ever!"

[a_rare_benedictine]

"That, my friend, is a great shame - but I'm glad you've had the opportunity now."

[intoaman]

He shrugs. "I'm not starving. There's always food to be found somewhere but here, it's just laying around. For anyone to eat. I don't even have to look."

[a_rare_benedictine]

"...but who prepares it?" he asks, giving the room another look around.

[intoaman]

"The rats something." He points to one of the very large rats, dressed and walking upright. "But mostly the magic bar makes it all on her own."

[a_rare_benedictine]

"The magic bar", Cadfael repeats slowly, staring at the rats. "That, I'm afraid, I'll have to see to believe."

[intoaman]

"I'll show you." He walks over to the bar and asks for a fizzy orange drink. Because he likes those. It appears from the bar, just like magic. "Try. it's nice! It has bubbles."

The old man lifts it and sniffs.

"...oranges? But there's something different, and not the bubbles..."

[intoaman]

"It's sweet, like nectar and honey but different."

[a_rare_benedictine]

Carefully - but out of a desire to know about it, not fear - he tastes the drink.

"...interesting. Not quite like honey, there's some other thing making the sweetness."

[intoaman]

"I don't know what it is. But I like it! And there's lots of different foods here."

[a_rare_benedictine]

"More than I would ever have imagined, I'm sure."

[intoaman]

"I don't even know what to ask for. Too many foods I don't know so I just wait to see what other people have that looks good."

[a_rare_benedictine]

"That seems as good a way to go about it as any", Cadfael says amiably. "After all, how could you know what may be out there, if you haven't seen it?"

[intoaman]

"My thoughts exactly. There's so much to learn about the world of men."

[a_rare_benedictine]

"Will this be your shape from now on, then?"

[intoaman]

He shrugs and looks down. "I'm whatever shape my lady needs."

[a_rare_benedictine]

"A loyal servant", he says gently. "Or, perhaps, one given little choice?"

[intoaman]

"She saved my life. I owe her my service." He ducks his head again.

[a_rare_benedictine]

"And do you love her for it? Truly?"

[intoaman]

"I admire her." He admits softly after a moment's hesitation. "I respect her. That's enough." It has to be.

[a_rare_benedictine]

"It's better than nothing", Cadfael agrees practically. "Certainly better than hating her."

[intoaman]

"She has a fierce spirit and has been hurt deeply. Some could see her as cruel or cold but she is trying to be strong for their sake." He ducks his head. "And she is in great pain. She needs someone she can lean on."
