Friday DE: What Might Have Been

I was going to pull from the suggestion box today, but inspiration struck during my commute.

What are some of the characters you've thought of playing before?

ETA: I forgot some house keeping. I will be out of town next week and [personal profile] inlovewithwords  has graciously volunteered to cover my DEs. Which also means my flakiness is turning epic next week as I'll be unlikely to have keyboard access.

While I can write a lot of different characters and voices I don't tend to have many "move in" so when they do I usually take them. That said, there are a few I have been so tempted by and contemplate off and on.

MCU Spider-man - Parker is a character I've thought about a few times, including the Ultimate Spider-man version who I waffled on too long and someone else picked him up. But I love, loooove the Tom Holland Spidey. He makes me laugh, and cheer, and breaks my heart and just hits all the right spots for me. Honestly the biggest reason I haven't picked him up is wanting to thread my pups against him. Also, I'd then be tempted to also app Ned, and I've already got a nerdy duo-dom in Barry and Cisco to juggle.

Ray Palmer - Crash landing in front of S.T.A.R. Labs and cheerfully greeting the stunned Team Flash with 'Hi. I'm Ray!." is probably when I most fell in love with Ray. Aside from taking another Arrowverse pup that I'm still hoping someone else will, I am also not up on Legends of Tomorrow, so I haven't pursued Ray.

Scotty from NuTrek - Simon Pegg's Scotty was just so much fun and excitement and I thought he'd be great to play off of people, but OMG the Star Trek and technical jargon is just So. Much. I was intimidated out of the app, and his voice was kind of touch and go with my anyways, so I never picked him up.

Huh, when did nerdy pups become my type? I was all about the brawlers with Logan, and Red, and Matty. XD I'm sure there are others, but those are the ones that come to mind.

Hee, thank you! Picking up Peter is so tempting sometimes. He's just so adorkable.

And EEEE, Caitlin! She would totally be loved.

I've occasionally considered Leonard Snart, actually...

I only know him from Legends, so I feel like there's a lot of his background I'm missing, but I adore him.

SNAAAAAAAAART!!! It is ridiculous how much fun he is.

He and Barry have an... interesting relationship. Frenemy doesn't quite describe it, and it definitely evolves as they go along. It would be good to have that background, because it does kind of motivate Snart when he gets into Legends, but that said, it wouldn't require a full Flash watch.

It would depend on when you brought him in from, but the first season of The Flash has four episodes with Snart, and the second has 2, after which point I do believe he joins The Legends. They'd be standalone enough to watch on their own (for Snart's involvement at least, you'd miss parts on what the hell is going on with Wells and such, but you'd get the necessary background on Snart).

Not that I'm trying to tempt you or anything. I'm just saying, is all. :D?

I've seen the first season of The Flash, but it's been a while, so I'd definitely want to rewatch those. I was actually thinking that I loved the dynamic between Snart and Ray in Legends. <.<

I make no promises, but he is definitely tempting. :)

I want to play a character from Legion (the FX TV series.) The problem is deciding which one. They're all amazing and I can see the different ways they would fit into the bar. Decisions are hard :(.

I've long had it in the back of my mind to play Baba Yaga. Needs more research, though, and I haven't made the time.

I also want have toyed with some player characters from video games I've started playing, but...the operative word is "started," tbh.

The first season is really amazing. The second season, the current one...I'm waiting for it to come together and make sense. I'm hopeful.

Last night I actually took the step of deleting all of my characters other than Hera and Kanan, kind of with the understanding that I won't be apping any more new ones. That's just where I'm at now, and with the exception of Hera and Kanan with RP I think at this point I'd rather just stick to sandboxy spaces.

But it does kind of make it a good time to talk about this, so!

Finn from Star Wars is a character I'd like to write, though definitely one where I think I'd just end up writing a lot of OOMs. There's a lot about his character I really like, I definitely easily get into raised a soldier kinds of storylines, and I'd be into exploring his background in the First Order. But... yeah, other outlets than RP would probably be better for that. Also from Star Wars, I would definitely never app them, but I've occasionally been tempted to sandbox Doctor Aphra, and Padme Amidala.

I was also, way back in the day, tempted to app a character from Dollhouse, particularly Sierra, but the logistics of playing a Doll character just seemed too complicated, as they'd pretty much have to forget the Bar every time. And the Bar at times might just be too overwhelming for them.

And I know at one point I at least made a journal for Sailor Neptune from Sailor Moon, but it would've been really hard to play her without a Sailor Uranus, so.

And there are characters I did actually app but either barely or never actually played -__- which include most recently Janet from The Good Place. She's another I might throw into a sandbox again sometime, though. And Abigail Hobbs from Hannibal - a character I had a lot of grand ideas for that never materialized, and bottom line, I probably just want to write fic for her.

And there are a couple of characters whom I... also probably just wanted to write fic, but also bottom line I wanted them to be AU versions of the characters, so they weren't really app-able anyway. One is Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games, except my AU version that changes the world up slightly, and more importantly, where she's gay in it so things... play out pretty differently. Though that probably would've still been manageable, unlike my other one, which was a genderswapped version of reboot!Star Trek Khan. Which, yeah, apping not really an option.

I... Smack me if you like, because I'll probably deserve it for this, but my first and only thought here was... reboot!genderbent!Khan=Marla. Original series reference, no idea if they name his wife, or even if he had a wife, in the alternate 'verse.

This borders on 'you may not want to pull on that thread' but - the reboot sadly did not realize that if you're going to rip off a TOS Khan story, it should be "Space Seed" and not Wrath of Khan, so there is no Marla. And admittedly my genderbent thing went a little beyond 'different timeline starting with first nuTrek' movie to kind of update the whole Khan story as a little less 'we can breed magic people' and instead 'genetic experimentation' more along the lines of X-Men/Orphan Black.

But I did kind of recast the Benedict Cumberbatch character as an actual Section 31 character but also kind of Marla-like historian who is fascinated by the Khan historical figure.

This is what I get for being loyal to the original timeline - I've only seen the first of the alternate universe movies, and suspect I'll be leaving it that way. They seriously didn't bring Space Seed elements into it? *blinkblinks* How in the world does that even work? It's bad enough they racebent Khan Singh into a white dude, and I know the original actor's ethnicity didn't fit his name either, but at least, at least, he was still a PoC.

Your Marla-like female Khan sounds frighteningly devious in her dedication. :)

At one point, well before trying out Aradia (who I mostly apped because someone suggested it to the entirety of crackchat and I was like "yeah, I like her, and I know her, I could probably pull it off", and that worked out all right), I got as far as making a journal and a sandbox post for the nameless zombie protagonist/narrator from Hanna Is Not A Boy's Name. But when I tried to actually play him in real time I had trouble nailing down what made his voice unique, because I couldn't separate what he in particular would do from what any sensible cool-headed person would do. I did keep the journal (even remade it for the LJ/DW migration) in case I wanted to try again sometime.

I briefly flirted with the idea of playing the Stanley Parable Narrator here during the limerence stage of my interest in that game, but it was too difficult to figure out the logistics of taking a disembodied voice with map-editing abilities into the Bar, especially if I wasn't also playing Stanley. I still got as far as making a journal because I had a good name for it, even though I never used it for anything.

I also thought about playing Jack Skellington and was serious enough about it to make a journal, but then Char beat me to it while I was still mulling over whether I could pull it off. I was a little intimidated by the prospect of playing a beloved Disney-movie character.

edit: Oh, and I wanted to bring in Wilson from Don't Starve before realising it wouldn't work very well. I RP him elsewhere, so capturing his voice wasn't the problem, it was the difference in setting. I didn't want him deciding he lived in the Bar now and never/rarely going back to his own world, but he comes from a survival game so even just having access to the bar would really throw off the balance.

Kurt Wagner. Duh. I'm mostly familiar with his depiction in X2 (duh) and the cartoon X-Men: Evolution (which I may have to revisit because I loved that series), but he was so endearing in Apocalypse as well. I have some of his comics, but not enough to really build off of that. Basically I just have a soft spot for him, but picking one version of him and creating a Milliways life for him is daunting.

Yay Kurt! He would definitely get Charles out to talk to him.

Ariana Dumbledore from the Potterverse, in a vain attempt to have her avoid canon horribleness and keep her dang agency. I never did dare go there, as it would have been painfully obvious what I was doing, and I knew it.

Joanne Maples, a minor character in two senses of the word (she's named and important to her episode's plot but never speaks, and she's a kid) from the Dragnet radio series of the '50's. I'm still not sure I could pull off anything circa 1955, but maybe...

Ensign Demora Sulu, from the Trekverse (the prime one, not the alternate one). Because one serious, competent, multilingual lady pilot in my head is not enough, apparently--I love you both dearly, please don't look at me like that! I suspect the Demora in my head might have a better outlet in fic, but then again, writing fic is what sparked her muse in the first place! If you ever see a journal with the name timely_inheritance join the comm, well... :)

I'm like Batty in that I don't often get characters that stick. So I'll look at various ones and go please move in and they don't.

Obi-Wan Kenobi, thanks to watching the Clone Wars, he became fascinating to me with his journey and where he's going and what happens to him. Sadly he's never been strong enough that I felt I could write him and then Cassian moved in. Also I'd love to try and play one of the clones, such great characters.

I would love to try playing Wylan from the Six of Crows books, he's so completely my kind of character.

Nick or Maree from Diana Wynne Jones' Magid books, I love them both and think they'd work well in Bar.

I can't think of anyone else off the top of my head. I'll have points of reading and watching and going oh you're interesting but its the rare ones that settle in. Though I feel bad for the ones I haven't been playing as much, Cassian and Star Wars are loud.
