Daily Entertainment: the Odd Couples!

Do my eyes deceive me? Is there no daily entertainment up for us poor office shills who might be staring down the barrel of nothing to do (like me >.>)? We* must do something about that! And we shall!

We've talked about odd friendships. Now let's talk odd romantic relationships. Is your pup in a romantic pairing with someone you never in a million years thought they'd hook up with? Or are there other romantic relationships in game between two pups you never in a million years thought would make such a cute couple as they do?

To start: Simon Skinner and Ana Pascal. I don't know--when you consider that Ana, progressively opinionated as she is, fell for Harold Crick, an uptight IRS agent, it doesn't seem too odd that she's paired up ith a 60-year-old serial killer/supermarket manager, but the fact that said serial killer/supermarket manager is Simon Skiiner makes it odd enough.

Sarah Jane and James Bond is another one that seems odd if you don't think about it too much, but given the qualities he liked in Tracy Draco in On Her Majesty's Secret Service (namely that she's resourceful and adventurous), it's not that odd. It's just that Sarah Jane's not your typical Bond girl.

And my pups are not involved in this, but Le Chiffre/Villiers? Has no right to be as cute as it is. BUT IT IS CUTE.

Discuss!

* Not royal "we." Poster is unsure who "we" refers to, as there's only me. I think.

I want to say Plourr/Aeryn (or Aeryn/Plourr, depending on your preference) was a surprise, but -- it wasn't. Not for me, anyway; I was sort of thinking it might happen right from the moment I apped her. I think it took Lorna by surprise, though, so it is an honorary mention!

Most of the relationships my characters have been involved in have been canonical, so not so surprising. Riley and Chloe startled the hell out of me; Jenny just threw her at his first entrance to be nice, so that there'd be someone for me to play against, and by the end of the thread, our conversation largely consisted of capslock and giggling. We hadn't planned it, but by the end of that first thread, we said, yeah, let's see where this goes. I never expected it, really; I thought, at best, he'd think she was cute and maybe have a little thing for her and nothing would come of it, and, man, it's been ages now. I think maybe I should have expected it, though, given their respective snark levels and interests in conspiracy theory.

As for characters who aren't mine, I never in a million years thought Lilly and Jayne would hook up. I don't know, there's just something about the big gruff mercenary named Jayne plus the dead blonde ... I can't think of an adjective to describe Lilly but Lilly that was unexpected, and just as unexpectedly sweet.

I suppose that any relationship between a mortal and virtual immortal is in some ways weird. So looked at that way, Knox and Rapunzel is a bit strange. Then add that she is a former queen and he is about as common as you can get, and you would have to say that it's very unlikely. And yet...looking back it really doesn't seem that strange. They bonded despite the inherent difficulties and differences, and it always felt right (even when it was not a love affair but just a friendship with benefits).

Still, it's fun to watch the relationships between mortals and those beyond such limits, be they Fables or outright gods.
fighting_mad: (medium - plourr does not giggle)

Alternate-but-slightly-related question:

[personal profile] fighting_mad 2008-01-07 03:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Ever wonder what could have happened romantically between two characters if _________ had not been in place/had not occurred/what have you?

IE: I've wondered, occasionally, what would have happened between Plourr and Han Solo, Plourr and Hannibal King (both Han and Hannibal as played by previous muns), and especially Plourr and Mary Anne Bell if she'd met each of them a couple more times before she got married. I've wondered how things would have gone between James Bond and Vesper Lynd if Sarah Jane hadn't factored into the equation. I've wondered what might have happened between Riley and Coyote (if anything; don't kill me, Jo!) when they met, if Riley hadn't had a girlfriend... Stuff like that.

Am I the only one who gets bored enough to consider this stuff?

My currently posting pups have no relationships in bar, so I have to go with "what might have happened/what might happen" and canon.

Kendra and Mugen still blows my mind. I have NO idea why she got along with such a cocky, wiseass punk (which is how she thinks of him), but they clicked, and I'm so very sorry that they won't get to team up in the future.

Kendra and Tom on the surface are another unlikely pair. Kendra's used to being around a lot of uber-competent alpha males and superpowered Boy Scouts (yes, Batman counts as an alpha male type, in his own way, and there's a picture of Hawkman next to the definition of "alpha male" in every encyclopedia in existence), and so Tom is incredibly refreshing to her. He's entirely masculine and extremely resourceful (but doesn't seem to realize it, which only adds to his charm), which reminds her of her compatriots back home, but his is a less bombastic-but-no-less-compelling masculinity, and she can totally relate to going through an apocalyptic event that completely knocks what you thought of as the dominant life paradigm down, and trying to pick up the pieces afterwards. Plus, he's cute. Did I mention cute?

As for She-Hulk, I think her oddest relationships were/are (obviously) in canon. Wyatt Wingfoot was a GREAT match for her, but they were also a completely odd match - dignified Native American decathlete, CEO, and Kaweezi tribal chief (and a TOTAL HUNK) dating a high-powered totally extroverted party girl attorney from Los Angeles?

But it worked while it did, and it was fun. I'm still kind of sorry that they never got married.

Jen's husband, John Jameson (the son of J. Jonah Jameson!)...the less said, the better. He had problems with her She-Hulk identity and was in general a total wet blanket. I'm very glad that Dan Slott saw the error in putting them together and promptly broke them up. Shortest superhero marriage on record!

As for brain breaking relationships, I remind you that She-Hulk bedded THE MOTHERFRELLING JUGGERNAUT.

[identity profile] gotham-knocking.livejournal.com 2008-01-07 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Whatever happened that Jen and Wyatt didn't get married? I seem to recall that there was a GN back in the day that actually promised a wedding.

I... don't really have one of those in this game.
In my other one, though? Regulus Black was briefly dating Willow from Buffy (Season One Willow, at that). And really, the fact that he even considered it was huge.

Here, I've got a few odd relationships (that aren't so odd anymore, thanks to context) that I follow - Tom and Door, Charlie McGee and Prometheus (!!!!!), Suzi and Whistler - but that's pretty much it.
(Thing What Might Count: Game play has actually explained a canon couple to me. Morwen/Telemain feels all kinds of Last-Minute Addition in the Enchanted Forest books, but that's because the chemistry's a lot more subtle than I could grasp when I was ten. It comes out in the threads, though, rare as they are.)

Melou/Angela Edmunds is the only non-canonical romantic relationship any of my pups have been in. And it is the only current romantic relationship any of my pups is in. Oddly, I've never really thought of it as unusual, despite their gigantic cultural differences. I guess it's the teenage thing that trumps all that.

Previously, I have to say the "friendship" between Cywyllog and Cypher was a little strange. I like it, but I really have no idea why they got along as well as they did. Sikozu's flirted with (and kissed!) Lenny Inchpot, but somehow I think getting her into any sort of relationship that she would actually consider romantic would be next to impossible.

Beyond all that, I occasionally wish I could get Clark involved with someone, but stupid canon is... well, stupid.

Being that I play a teenager who has had crushes on several people -- I did not expect him to fall for Steph (Fire Prince/Vilgante, whut?), briefly crush/worship Rachel, or to crush on Ana Pascal. (She's older! Tattooed! Zuko, what the hell?)

On the other hand, his combative but passionate relationship with Mel in another game made a lot of sense ot me. In turns: Hellboy/Angua = Where the hell did THAT come from? Yet, so full of awesome and conflict.

[identity profile] gotham-knocking.livejournal.com 2008-01-08 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Zuko/Steph was one of the most organic relationships I've ever seen in the Bar. Weird, yes, but it made so much sense.

[identity profile] nothawkingbird.livejournal.com 2008-01-07 07:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Got two serious relationships: Draco/Mia which a lot is "what the hell is a nice girl like you doing with a cowardly manipulative git like THAT?" To the point that any Gryffindor who meets Mia for the first time? Just shouldn't drink butterbeer while doing so, k? you will lose your drink all over the table or bar.

The brief thing that was Draco/Miniver was also mildly strange since Miniver was a poor muggle originally.

Kate/Will. Once again figured they might be friends, maybe even good ones. But falling hard in love like THAT, nuh-uh. Had some fights over the whole fact that there's almost a freaking 1000 year difference in time periods, but still finding ways to make it work. (Also with possibly new canon for her, this also makes me wonder what could have happened if Eli had been in the bar as well.)

My other current pups? Well Nathan's still sort of married, separation hasn't quite occurred yet.

Truman's kind of pining for Sylvia, (but I think he might be getting a mild crush on Ella), Johnny Smith? Well, he did have one brief odd thing with Naraht as a mermaid.

Right now? Rather single, and worrying more about stopping Stillson, even if there's mild longing still for his old sweetheart, Sarah.

Alas, if only Morgan were still in Bar! She and Mia could have a very interesting conversation about making people spit-take about boyfriends.

Only, in Morgan's case it was less "what the hell is a nice girl like you doing with a cowardly manipulative git like THAT?" and more "what's a nice girl like you doing with a Death Eater torturer!"

But, similar in principle!

Hmm, none of my pups have in-bar, non-canon relationships.

Canon-wise, it is hard to see what Ganymede sees in Zeus that makes him stick around. Really, I think it's a 75% pragmatic relationship, to the extent that he likes being immortal and hanging out on Olympus and not being smote and 25% "Well, he's really sweet and giving, when he's not torturing people or lying and being a whore."

...There would be a lot of existential angst, on Ganymede's part, if there were ever an in-Bar relationship for him.

Just about any in-Bar relationship, excepting Wayne/Dahlia, would surprise me, for Dahlia Malloy or Momiji Sohma. The former of the pair is just too much in love with her husband. Unless canon changes that, it would take an incredibly magical relationship to make her fall in love with someone else, let alone fall so hard that it would trump her feelings for Wayne. Even in that case, she'd probably give it up for the sake of her family.

Momiji I can imagine having feelings for a lot of people, but chances are that he would never develop a relationship from any of them. Between the weird age dynamic that he has going on and his tendency to be exuberantly affectionate towards everyone, it would really amaze me if any of his connections in Bar ever went beyond close friendship.

Horatio's kind of a wild card. I've never thought about him in terms of relationships, and he's only met a few folks in Bar. So, no idea where he's going, in this dimension.

Hardest pairing to explain to people: Morgan le Fey and Barty Crouch Jr. But they weren't weird! They suited each other! She didn't care that he had tortured people, and he worried about her being crazy and didn't seem to mind that she was pregnant to her brother, and they giggled about spells and were the sweetest, bestest things ever, should have run off together and lived happily ever after...

And everyone goes '...wtf?' when I try and explain it. :(

Um. *thinks* See, my couples all make sense to me! Or, did, when I had them more than not-quite-yet Medusa/Sam Linnfer (which was sorta...first thread and giggling about them being so shippable, and then ANOTHER person saying 'OTP') and sortavaguely Medusa/Mark Antony, and Ajedrez/Nicholas Wolfwood* when she was in Bar.

Like, Mordred/War. PERFECT sense. So, I have a hard time thinking that they are odd.

Bwahaha. An excuse to gush about the crazy-insane adorableness that is Le Chiffre/Villiers.

Because really? It shouldn't work. Villiers is a nice, quiet guy who gets squeamish around dead bodies and takes care of people for a living. Le Chiffre is a sarcastic, generally caustic banker who kills people for a living.

Yet, they get along wonderfully. They snark incessantly and are strangely sweet to each other.

And those two break my brains with their cuteness every few tags.

I haven't played out that many non-canon 'ships in-bar. *thinks* Ann/Jack was canon; Guinevere/Arthur, Guinevere/Owen, and Jennifer/Arthur were all canon (those wacky Arthurians, man *rueful*). --Oh, I know!

1) Charles Wallace. *amused* The boy knows how to pick 'em -- his last serious relationship was with a dead, slightly crazy, Greek/French princess of myth, and now he's making crush-like noises at the immortal personification of a mythological river of forgetfulness.

But it's Charles Wallace, so OF COURSE he would go for people like that. I just. OF COURSE.

2) Henry Fitzroy, a 450-yr-old Roman Catholic vampire who has battled demons and demonic types in canon, and Memnoch the freaking DEVIL. I mean. WHAT.

But man it was hot.

3) Carmela has a raging crush on Filif the sentient Christmas tree, but that's canon.
