"...if you want it, certainly. It must have come from the plants."

What a strange young man.

[intoaman]

"Thank you." He smiles again and pops it on his mouth, crunching it happily. "These are my favourite."

[a_rare_benedictine]

"I'm sure they're... very nutritious", he agrees, studying Diaval. "What is your name, my son?"

[intoaman]

"Diaval." He nods, letting himself drop from the rafters. With limited success. He still isn't all that good with feet. "Who are you?"

"My name is Brother Cadfael." He reaches automatically to steady Diaval when he stumbles. "What can you tell me of this place?"

[intoaman]

He smiles, standing up straight now he's down. "Who's brother are you?"

"This is a place called Milliways. It's magic. Complicated and old magic. And there's lots of food. There are even fruit trees outside and no-one minds if you eat from them."

"A brother of the Benedictine order, and to all men." He nods. "You aren't used to so much food?"

[intoaman]

He shrugs, cocking his head. "I am no man. And ravens are rarely welcomed in field or kitchen."

"You look like a man to me", Cadfael says mildly. "And ravens are God's creatures as we are."

[intoaman]

"This is what I was made into." He holds out his hands, looking at them speculatively and wiggling his fingers. "Gods may like us but farmers don't." He is very heavily scarred.

[a_rare_benedictine]

"Made into by whom?" He gestures to a nearby pair of chairs, inviting.

[intoaman]

"My mistress, the protector of the Moors and queen of the fairies." He says it very matter of fact as he folds himself gracelessly into the chair.

[a_rare_benedictine]

"...I see." He's reconsidering the notion of the lad being mad, because there are stories... "And where are these... moors?"

[intoaman]

"In the low country between the mountains of Lower Saxony and the kingdom of men called Reinhardswald." He answers without hesitation.

[a_rare_benedictine]

"I know Lower Saxony, and a forest of that name, but no kingdom", he says slowly. "Tell me, what is the year?"

[intoaman]

He shrugs. "Ravens do not reckon these things. But men calls it 1330."

[a_rare_benedictine]

"Almost two hundred years past my own time", he says, wondering.

[intoaman]

"This place can be strange like that. People come from different places and different times." He shrugs. It's all magic, to complicated for him.

[a_rare_benedictine]

"So it would seem." He glances around, eyes full of interest. "Have you been long in this place?"

[intoaman]

He thinks, frowning. "Half a moon? Not very long. I haven't eaten so well. Ever!"

[a_rare_benedictine]

"That, my friend, is a great shame - but I'm glad you've had the opportunity now."

[intoaman]

He shrugs. "I'm not starving. There's always food to be found somewhere but here, it's just laying around. For anyone to eat. I don't even have to look."

[a_rare_benedictine]

"...but who prepares it?" he asks, giving the room another look around.

[intoaman]

"The rats something." He points to one of the very large rats, dressed and walking upright. "But mostly the magic bar makes it all on her own."

[a_rare_benedictine]

"The magic bar", Cadfael repeats slowly, staring at the rats. "That, I'm afraid, I'll have to see to believe."
