"...trees in miniature." He leans in for a closer look. "I've never seen such a thing."

She pulls the picture with her fingers, zooming in. "It's a very nice pastime. It's... It's probably not healing the same way your herbs are, but it.... It makes me feel less unpleasant."

"That is as much healing as any for the body", he says with a slight smile. "Though I'm sorry to hear you need it."

She waves her hand again. "Oh that- you don't have to be..."

In all honesty, if he's really from the time he says he is, she's surprised the term witch hasn't come up yet.

He's a very enlightened monk, for the time, and he doesn't believe in witchcraft.

"It's rather what I do", he says gently.

"Sir..." she quietly replies, unsure what to make of that.

She tucks her phone away in her cardigan pocket. And then she remembers her manners and bows.

"Ah, thank you for letting me take a picture of your herbs! Is- is it all right if I post it on my blog? I can put your name on it if you'd like the credit."

"No need for that", he says easily. "They're just herbs, like any other of their kind... but my name, since I haven't told you, is Brother Cadfael."

[halfemptyglasses]

"Brother Cadfael?" she repeats. "Ah, my name is Kuriyama."

"I'm very pleased to meet you, Kuriyama." He smiles.

[halfemptyglasses]

She holds her tongue from instinctively saying that was unpleasant, because he hasn't been unpleasant this entire time.

"Ah, I- I prefer Kuriyama-san. Or... Or I guess Miss Kuriyama? I'm guessing you aren't from Japan, and... and lack of title is... quite close."

"Forgive me", he says immediately. "I've heard of Japan, but never had occasion to... go there... Kuriyama-san."

[halfemptyglasses]

"Of course! Y-you didn't know," she goes, waving her hand again. "And I've never been outside of Japan, s-so I'm not one to talk about anything else."

"Would you tell me about Japan, then? I'd like to hear something of it."

[halfemptyglasses]

"I- I could," she agrees. "I don't know if I can tell you what you'd like to know, but I'll try. And... And I'd like to hear about your herbarium?"

"Then it can be a fair exchange! And to begin... where do you live, in that country?"

[halfemptyglasses]

Kuriyama plucks her glasses off and starts cleaning them.

"Ah, I- I was just moving..."

"...is that a sensitive question?" He considers. "The part of the country, then, if not the city. Are there mountains, plains...?"

She returns the red frames to her face before giving the name of the small town she's heading towards.

"There's some forest area and some cliffs, pretty inland I think?" she describes. "M-most of the area is owned by the Nase clan."

"Are you of that clan, then, or only have their permission?"

[halfemptyglasses]

"Ah, Kuriyama is my clan's name," she explains. "I... I'm speaking with the head of the Nase clan."

At some point, anyway...

He's interested by the correction and by everything else she says, plainly.

"Have your clans been on good terms?"

[halfemptyglasses]

"Ah, no... But I'm the only Kuriyama left, so- so I'm trying. A-and I was asked by the Nase clan, so...."

She's very young to be the last of her clan, and he looks at her with sympathy.

"So perhaps they're trying to settle the strife of the past."

[halfemptyglasses]

"Maybe," she lies. "Ah-anyway, what is your herbarium like? What kind of things grow where you live?"

"It tends to be cold, much of the year, so nothing of the kind that needs warmer weather to thrive - many of the fruits of the Holy Land could never grow in England."
