"So you're going to learn it, and then spontaneous Sarabande will happen on the momentary say-so of that choirmaster?" Hannibal says. "Well, artistic tempers, I hope. Take heart, Miss ...?"

"Well, I already know it, I just need to brush up," she says. "It's less artistic temper and more that he's been getting us ready for Evensong and has Christmas in the planning, and has two small children. He's usually the poster boy for decaffeinated anything."

"Do you have your flute with you, Miss?" Hannibal asks.

[repositorian]

"It's Kate," she says, since he's not going to give up the Miss thing. "And yeah, I do, it's in the backpack on the chair."

She gestures to a dark violet thing with a flute case, music folders and half a dozen textbooks in it, and a bright paisley umbrella hanging from one strap. There are a few buttons clipped to the bag as well, from 'I <3 hot dwarves' to 'keep calm and read on' and 'coexist' written with religious symbols. "But right now I'm not up to inviting an audience."

"I was thinking of accompanying you on the piano, for practice," Hannibal says smirking. "I'm hardly going to make you play for me while I merely listen, and you must be thinking about me passing judgement on the worth of your skills, Kate."

"The idea had crossed my mind," she says breezily. "You'd be no worse than a judge at LGPE in that capacity, but them I'm not entirely fond of either."

But she shrugs, and hauls the bag onto her shoulder; it's plainly heavy, and most of the books are indeed history course texts.

"If I promise no judging at all?" Hannibal says, raising an eyebrow.

[repositorian]

"You'd be funny, and you'd also be lying," she says. "But hey, I've got the sheet music if you want to play harpsichord," he says.

[cook_the_rude]

"Would you like me to?" Hannibal says, holding out his hand for the sheet music.

[repositorian]

"...Sure," she says, pulling it out of the folder and handing it over. "Let me get mine."

Hannibal sits down at the harpsichord and opens the sheet music.

[repositorian]

"Conduct away, maestro," she murmurs, blowing through her flute to get the metal warmed up and running a few scales to get her fingers ready.

He waits until she's done, takes a deep breath, and then nods to her, starting at the same moment.

She plays along with him, and though she's not professionally good she can hold her own very well, playing the music with feeling like she could dance to it. It's fun, and she ends up smiling--as much as one can while playing the flute--before the end.

Hannibal nods at her when the piece ends.

"You're doing quite well," he says. "A decently trained amateur that knows what she's doing, much as I myself. I hope the people in your church treasure what you do for them and won't rudely criticise you for non-existent faults because they're used to getting their classical music canned, and from the best professional performers in existence. That's a bane for music lovers everywhere."

She smiles. "Thanks. So says my dad, too--he was a professional, though, so I take him at his word there. And no, we have a lot of instrumental preludes and such, because we've got a fair few people who play different things."

[cook_the_rude]

"Excellent," Hannibal says. "What was he professional at?"

[repositorian]

"Musician," she says. "Vocalist and french horn. He teaches now, though."

[cook_the_rude]

"Interesting," Hannibal says. "French horn. Orchestra musician, I take it?"

[repositorian]

"Band," she corrects. "No strings. He was in the US Air Force; if he'd been in an orchestra we'd have been up in DC." They're in Georgia, as Hannibal might have picked up by now through the accent.

"I know how to play all of one thing on French horn."

Hannibal laughs.

"And that is?" he asks.

[repositorian]

"Siegfried's horn call. It's just memorizing a combination of keys, because I can't even play a scale on the instrument, but that's what I wanted to learn."

[cook_the_rude]

"Certainly not the most trivial thing you could ask to learn," Hannibal says, nodding again.

[repositorian]

"Nah. I wanted to learn that in particular, because Wagner was my introduction to opera. My dad gave me the whole Ring cycle on vinyl when I turned 18 and I loved it. Still do," she notes.

"Vinyl?" Hannibal says, approvingly. "Which recording?"
