"...well, I'm quite sure Brother Jerome would not approve of this."

Cadfael blinks up at him.
"Hello, there."

"...if you want it, certainly. It must have come from the plants."
What a strange young man.

"I'm sure they're... very nutritious", he agrees, studying Diaval. "What is your name, my son?"

"Probably not." He turns towards the man, studying him with shrewd eyes. "Can you explain what it is... Father?"
no subject
no subject
"1139", he supplies, "and the abbey at Shrewsbury. I would ask why and how, but I suspect that will remain a mystery."
no subject
no subject
"Unusual?" He tilts his head in something like a shrug. "Well, I did come late to the cowl, but there's been nothing so exceptional in my life."
He understates.

"Those... Those aren't unpleasant," she comments about them. "Not unpleasant at all."
no subject
"I would hope not", he says, bemused. "They're meant for healing."
no subject
She would have the same reaction for most plants, though, but herbs always look so pretty. And then she realizes she's still holding her phone.
"Oh! Oh, do you... Do you mind if I take a picture? Of the herbs?"
no subject
"A picture?" He blinks at the strange device she's holding. "Well, you're welcome to, of course, but... how?"
no subject
"I can take pictures with my phone? It has a camera built in."
no subject
"...I'm sorry, my dear, I'm going to sound very stupid. I know neither - phones nor cameras."
He's studying the screen with great interest, though.

She's been able to go up several grades for school, but learning origami past the 'crane' is still a work in progress. The frog she's trying to work on looks like he's had one too many drinks.

Brother Jerome doesn't approve of women in general, really.
Cadfael pauses in passing, looking curiously at her work.
"Good afternoon, daughter."
no subject
"Afternoon." She accent's british and her attention's diverted from her work to observe him. "Are those from your garden, or Bar's garden?"
no subject
"My own", he tells her. "...well, the abbey's, but I tend and work with the plants."
no subject
Though admittedly, Matilda was a mite short for her age (not as short as Lavender though) so comparing her size to a pumpkin may've not been such a feat.
no subject
"I'm not sure what a pumpkin may be", he admits, "but any plant your size would be quite a feat."
